For those of us with diverticulous the diets are similar to IBS but there are differences at times.

I am wondering if there has been any thought to a separate message board for this condition or in fact if there is sufficient interest.

I know I am looking at possible surgery on this problem in the summer. I have bowel redundancy, which means a longer colon with maybe an extra loop or two, a couple of polyps and of course diverticulous. My reason for thinking possible surgery is that I was referred to a specialist for a colonoscopy. He has a barium enema report already. He scheduled an appointment only for now at his office.

In the interim I am going on an Alaskan cruise in a couple of weeks and trying to figure out what foods to avoid while on ship. With all the food they give you on a cruise may not be easy.

Just a thought anyway. I unfortunately could not monitor such a board from Canada and with my system.

Hi. I am going slightly off the subject here, so bear with me. My husband had diverticulitis & opted to have laproscopic surgery on March 28, 04. He had about 10 inches of his colon removed and was left with about a two inch scar under his belly button & a couple of little scars where the surgeon made his incisions. His recovery has been absolutely amazing. He was in the hospital for three days. When he left the hospital the doctor told him he could eat anything he wanted. Of course, he had to take it easy at first, but now he is frolicking through food like mad. He can eat everything. His only restrictions were not to drive for two weeks, no motorcyle riding for three to six weeks (he made it three weeks and two days) and he couldn't lift more than 20lbs for one month. I hope I didn't bore you to death, but I have just been waiting for the opportunity to share how amazing the laproscopic surgery was. You would not know by looking at him that he had major surgery less than two months ago. Now of course other people might have different laproscopic stories, but it really worked for my hubby.

Thanks for reply.

I had laprascopic surgery in 2002 for removal of gall bladder. My only problems after was that I had to go back to get one hole stitched but main problem was for some reason bladder paralyzed from the gas used to knock me out.

But after wearing bladder bags for a couple of weeks and self catheteration for a further week it came back to normal.

But the surgery itself was a breeze. I walked out of hospital within a few hours with only minor gas pain.

Now the bladder/catherization part doesn't sound at all pleasant, but your surgery story sounds great. If I ever have to have surgery, I would choose the lascropic.
