Hello, I need some advice on stool softeners. I've been told I need to start taking an iron supplement because I'm anemic, and I'm really concerned about it becuase of the fact that it can be constipating. I'm IBS-A and so I do often have bad boughts of constipation, so I don't want to take anything that will make that worse, although from what I can tell I don't really have a choice. The recommendations from the doctor were things like "eat more bran" (arg) and that I could take a stool softener like Colace. I've had to do this before after surgery when I was on high doses of constipating pain killers, but I'm going to be on the iron for awhile and I wonder about how taking a stool softener everyday will affect me. Does anyone have any suggestions on whether this would be ok? Or other ways to help make the iron more tolerable? Thanks, Kelly

Well you could start out just taking one a day and see how that goes. Stool softeners are more mild then laxatives, so they shouldn't make anything horrific happen, unless you take a bunch.

Thanks for your info fishnets. Does anyone else know if they're ok to take long term? For example, the whole time I'm taking the iron I may have to take them, which could be at least a few months...anyone?
