From, once again, Nat'l. Inst. of Allergy & Infectious Disease pub: "Adverse Reactions To Foods", 1984, p. 107: "Oxalate and anthraquinone glycosides cause CORROSIVE GASTROENTERITIS which, if severe, lead to DEATH. Rhubarb, spinach, sorrel, beet leaves, tea and cocoa contain large quantities of these substances..." I would certainly avoid large quantities of these!

...the heck if I'm giving up cocoa or tea!

I'm fairly certain I'll be able to control myself around beet leaves, though.

You poor thing. We're going to have to come up with some new recipes for you that don't have beet leaves in them...

I suppose rhubarb-sorrel pie is out, too...?

Thanks for this post. In all seriousness, it's nice to read various different warnings. However, I am a little on overload with all the health/nutrition DOs and DON'Ts out there. That's why I'm responding with humor... Please keep posting stuff you find! I'm sure a lot of people will get a lot from it! I don't want you to feel insulted 'cause I think it's funny I have to give up beet leaves now!

That may explain why I felt so sick after having rhubarb this morning. I thought cooking it would be enough, but I guess not!!! I am going to chuck that frozen rhubarb now!

No, don't chuck your rhubarb!! I love rhubarb. You just have to eat it carefully. I'm assuming you had it pretty much by itself? Rhubarb is in the same plant family as celery, and, like celery, can be a little tough to digest because of its stringiness. But if you put it in safe pies and cobblers it can be safe and yummy! If you want me to I can look around for some safe rhubarb recipes for you. I'd hate to see it go to waste!
