How does dairy affect you?

I am wondering if dairy is a real trigger for me. I thought it was, but now I think it has more to do with the fat content. I wanted to know what other people thought.

I know that frozen yogurt causes me huge pains, is that really dairy? I would like to eat some type of frozen treat and I am not sure what my tummy can take, or where I should start.

Dairy is a BIG trigger! My GI told me -- NO DAIRY! Ditto with my regular doc. It's a big trigger for most people with IBS. It's most definitely a no-no.

There are marvelous soy substitutes, HappyDay. You can find some in the grocery store, but the best selection is at a good health food store. I love seeing newbies come onto the boards with questions just like yours, and then they discover soy "ice cream" and go crazy. It makes me smile. (I love the stuff!)

And yes, frozen yogurt is most definitely DAIRY! Try Tofuti Cuties instead. YUM! (Again, at the health food store.) Frozen yogurt was fun -- I remember -- but trying all the new soy products is even FUNNER!

You've started at the right place -- HERE. Check out the other posts on Soy Dream frozen non-dairy dessert. My fave is Mocha Fudge. (Everyone here is sick of hearing me talk about it so much.)

Keep asking questions, and you'll find a LOT of great info here!

Bev

I was afraid to try them, but being the big ice cream and frozen yogurt lover that I used to be I bought some. Had two last week with no problem. YUMMMMMMYYYY!!!

Thank you for those comments. They make sense, I think in order for me to really listen, I need to read it, hear it, and then experience it myself. I think I have covered all 3 now!

TO the store I will go.....soy here I come

Dairy is really bad for me. It used to be I could have things that had a bit of milk in it, just not that much, but not anymore. Now I stay totally clear of it. I do occasionally have some Soy cheese slices that have casein in it. My understanding is that it's a dairy protein but doesn't have lactose in it. The occasional slice seems to be ok for me. Unfortunately that's the only type of soy cheese available in my town and the closest city is an 8 hour drive

Dairy is a killer for me too. It's the one thing that's almost CERTAIN to cause an attack. Even before my IBS got worse I was lactose intolerant and had trouble with the stuff. You'd definitely be better off without it.

Good news... if you like frozen yogurt, try Soy Delicious soy ice creams. They're fabulous! My favorites are Cookie Avalanche and Mint Marble Fudge. The Cookie Avalanche is pretty high in fat (kind of like the Ben and Jerry's of soy ice cream), but the Mint is pretty reasonable. You won't miss the frozen yogurt once you get these, believe me!

An 8-hour drive you say? Mine's 30, thank you very much -- ONE WAY!

But that's okay; the health food store down there is so incredible; I find EVERYTHING soy -- it's pure heaven. You name it, I can find it there -- everything, that is, except Heather's ginger altoids.

I've never heard of those! By the actual Altoid brand? I'll have to keep my eye out for that.
Sorry Bev and JBI that your drives are so long...that sucks I personally think that every grocery store should at least stock the basics in terms of non-dairy and health food products, I think there's more of a market out there than most people realize.

Hey Bev,
I did a little search for those Ginger altoids, and the altoids website actually ships them! So, if you've been looking for them, you could order them. Shipping didn't seem too bad for the US (i'm sure it's awful to ship to Canada) but I'll include a link: http://www.clorders.com/altoids/shoppe.html

30 hours !?!

Wow Bev that's pretty far. Surely Seattle, Portland or even Vancouver BC have some health food stores and are closer to you than 30 hours.

I drove from Toronto to Chicago and that was only 12 hours.

Whoa! I did say that, didn't I? Duh.

I meant miles, not hours. What was I thinking?

So you have to drive 8 HOURS to get to a health food store?!? Good grief, take a plane!

My "real" healthfood store is 30 miles away but my local grocery store has a nice health food section that I am just starting to explore.
