I have been reading as much of the posts and everything that I can, but I just had a quick question. What are the main things I want to look out for when reading the ingredients? It would be great to know what to look out for because all of this overwhelming me at the moment. I thought for sure that stuffing would be ok since it was bread and everything but didn't realize there was chicken fat in it, then I thought Honeycombs would be bad cause they are sugary, but they are ok! I am sorry, I just stress out easily (part of the reason I am sick!)

Thanks to everyone for being so welcoming! It is so great to find people who understand what I am going through!

Amanda, it IS overwhelming. I know, because I was kinda freaked out at first with all the information -- it's called "Information Overload." But after awhile, you read the same thing over and over again from other newbies coming on the boards and you read the responses, and then a little light goes off and you say to yourself, "Self, I remember that!"

Please just relax and enjoy the ride. It really is fun experimenting with different foods and new recipes.

The ingredients lists are a Godsend! You DO learn how to read them after awhile, believe me. First of all, anything dairy is a red light. MSG stands out too. Chicken fat is just disgusting.

For awhile, just until you get comfortable with reading ingredients, choose your favorite things and write down the ingredients, then come on the boards and ask us. There are a lot of things that some people are sensitive to that others are not. For example, if something says whole wheat, a lot of people can't tolerate it; I'm lucky because I can and it's good for me so that's not a red light for me -- but it would be for a lot of people. Would it be for you? Are you at a point yet where you know what you can tolerate and what you can't? It's kind of trial-and-error until you get to that point.

Trust me, it gets easier, it really does. Just keep reading and keep trying stuff. You know, that Rice-a-Roni might not even bother you, whereas it would bother a lot of us -- so you have to just be brave. (For me, though, when it comes to some things (such as broccoli), I'm not very brave at all!

You're doing great by asking, Amanda! You'll learn real fast.

Bev

Ok here are a few things to look out for:

look out for MSG (Monosodium Glutimate)this is in some canned soups, chips (not that we eat those, unless they are baked lays)and its in some seasonings.
Whey (form of dairy)
some people are sensitive to high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)
Fats
Eggs (its ok it its egg whites)
Whole wheat flour (wheat flour is ok..that's white flour

I know there is more...I'm just drawing a blank. Look for low fat items. And always read the labels...one brand could be safe and one like it might not be.

It will get easier. And Bev is right..just post the ingredients here on the boards. We are here to help!
