My mom has IBS too...and I told her about Heather's diet and books and about the hynotherapy...and she just argues with me! She keeps saying "I've lived with this for years--and you just have to live with it"...and she insists that "rice, pasta, bananas, and bread are binding"! Any suggestions? Thanks everyone!!

RUCHIE- I CAN RELATE SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My mom has IBS too but she does it all wrong!!!!!!!!! I tell her that bran isnt good for ibs-d. she says bran is fiber and fiber is good. I say apples arnt good for d, she says Fruit is good. I say IBSers should not drink dairy and red meat. She says- if you dont eat dairy and red meat, youll be anorexic!
I say Mom, IBS has lots of dietary restrictions. She says: Ang, im older and smarter, and i know what IBSers can and cannot handle
My mom is on the drug Pamine, and its practicall stopped her attacks, so now she eats whatever she wants but still gets stomach pains, and eats poorly. she'll have:
breakfast: eathier raisin bran with whole milk or nothing
lunch: Split Pea soup and crackers
DInner- Usually red meat

i wish she would listen to me and try to understand.

Red meat, whole milk?!? I think I'd die after eating this for a day.

My mother has it too, although thankfully for her she doesn't get the cramping that many of us do. I've tried to tell her many times how to work against the symptoms by controlling her diet, but she seems to like the food she eats more than the odd time that she's suck in the bathroom. I guess it's her choice overall though.

My mom has IBS too and I've told her about the IBS diet and how to cope with it but like the rest of you -
she keeps eating whatever she wants.

Unfortunately, you can't help the unhelpable!

Yep - my sister has it too, but dosen't want to try the diet. She is on a high protein diet instead, although she does eat chicken rather than red meat most of the time. We have a good relationship, but I have always been thinner, and I think if I told her the high-protein diet was not healthy, she would just tell me that I don't know how it feels to be overweight.

I've learned that there are just some things people have to decide for themselves.
