Ok, I feel stupid for asking this but I'm new to all of this so I'm not exactly sure where to look for information. Basically, I'm in the process of trying to cut out dairy and I've found soy milk and cheese without much difficulty, but two things I can't find are some non-dairy kind of butter (does such a thing even exist?). Also, I used to love making smoothies with frozen yogurt (vanilla) and orange juice and various fruits...does anyone know if you can find non-dairy frozen yogurt? I can find lactose free frozen yogurt but I know that's not good enough. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kelly

I use Soy Garden for a butter sub, but I'm not sure what's available in Cananda.

Heather has a great smoothie recipe in EFI for strawberry banana smoothie. I use this recipe as a base and change out the strawberries with other fruits such as blueberries, peaches, etc, or a mix of fruits.

I also use Soy Garden. It's really yummy -- it tastes (and cooks) so much more like butter than anything else I've ever had. Also, it's 100% non-hydrogenated, so it's not the "BAD" fat (but it's still fat, so you have to use it sparingly).

I've had the banana berry smoothie that Mags mentioned, and it's very good. But I just had a brainstorm. I use soy milk in my smoothie, along with a banana and blueberries (oh, I do love my blueberries!), but why not substitute a little (I said a little) Soy Dream vanilla frozen non-dairy dessert in place of the soy milk? That might taste kinda like frozen yogurt. Oooh .... I'm gonna have to try that!

Thanks for planting the idea in my little pea brain! Yum...

I recently made a smoothie with several ice cubes to give it that fluffy frozen texture and body, instead of banana or frozen yogurt or whatever. Makes the ingredients list simpler to keep in stock.

Might be worth a try.

That sounds good...I'll have to try it, THe only thing is I'm supposed to stay away from fruits and veggies for the next few weeks until the specialist sees me since I'm not digesting them well and I have had to miss work and stuff and nothing has helped. But once I get things under control I'm definately going to try it. My fave for smoothies is raspberries and blackberries --- yummm!

Hi - once you're back on fruits and veggies, if you do have IBS one of the safest ways to add in fresh fruits is with a smoothie. Blending the fruit till smooth mechanically breaks down the insoluble fiber before you even eat it, making it much less likely to cause GI problems for you. So, you have a great treat to look forward to!

My trick for making very thick, frosty smoothies is to use frozen fruit. I like a base of peaches, then I add cherries, some blueberries, a bit of pineapple. You could add blackberries and raspberries, but don't over do these, as those seeds are really high in insoluble fiber and might not even blend up completely. I add just enough soy milk to get the mixture to blend and I use a food processor instead of a blender because it handles very thick, frozen fruit much more easily.

I do fine with cold foods and drinks, but for some folks ice cold foods can make their gut contract and trigger problems, so just watch out for that.

Anyway, my whole point here was that by using frozen fruits you might be able to duplicate the thick and creamy result you used to get from frozen yogurt smoothies.

I got hooked on smoothies last Summer, and now whenever the weather is warm enough I whip one up for an afternoon snack. I'm a big fan of using bananas as a base for my smoothies. They taste great mixed with blueberries, strawberries, etc. I've also made them with some different flavored soy yogurts thrown in to give them extra flavor and creaminess. Your imagination is the limit, so be creative! Smoothies are so much fun.
