As I am fairly new to this and still experimenting, my question may have been adequately answered previously. Anyway, which form of alcohol beverage is most likely to spur attack: straight spirits such as brandy, gin, whiskey or malt beverages (beer). Any difference in light or regular beers?

If I had my choice, I'd go for a glass of wine anyday over beer and liquor. Beer is carbonated and bloats me (though I love the stuff) and hard liquor is well, concentrated and, hard. I personally found them bothersome. A small glass of wine with a meal is a different story. Most times I tolerate it well - definitely don't drink on an empty stomach.

If you really want a beer, you might try an ale instead (no bubbles!). I handle Guinness better than wine and wine better than beer (in fact I avoid it totally). I have a theory that Guinness actually HElPS my IBS, since it relaxes me, but maybe I'm just dreaming... And Hans is right--never on an empty stomach! Cheers!

I think that this is one of those individual things... I seem to be allergic or intolerable of something in beer and wine (and malted beverages) but fine with some hard liquor. Who knows why.

I'm like Julie -- sometimes when my tummy isn't feeling up to par (but not a full attack), I fix myself a Jack. It relaxes me -- and my tummy -- and I feel a lot better. I have to limit it to only one, though, and I have to have a roll or some sourdough bread beforehand.
While I can tolerate a JD with no problem, even a small sip of champagne or sparkling burgundy would send me to the john for the rest of the night!

You sound like I did with my Amstel Light! HA HA HA! Honestly, I love my beer, but it was not going to work if I was going to lose inches for the wedding.....but now I am so used to not having it that if I drink it now I get horribly bloated...and for an IBS-C that is BAD. I do drink wine a few times a week, though. That seems to be okay.

Thanks... you have to have a glass of red wine for me because I was the BIGGEST red wine freak before the intolerance developed.

I know -- I like my Jack. He likes me too. He's surely helped me through many a tough time in my life!
You know who else liked his Jack? Did you know they buried Frank Sinatra with a very large bottle of the stuff!

Just a note of caution here. I am a real fan of ales and tried a pint of something different before Christmas. It was luverly - more stoutish than ale...fluffy came to mind as an adjective and it tasted great. HOWEVER, I'm pretty sure that's what put me in hospital. So be careful on the stranger beers. I haven't dared tried Guiness or anything like it since. And I adore the stuff!!!

"AH, alcohol! The cause of, and solution to, most of life's problems!" (Homer Simpson)
It really varies for me. I can't really drink beer anymore, although the occasional glass of wine or harder stuff sometimes will be fine, sometimes it won't though. It all depends.

Thank you all so much for the input. Now that I think about it, I have always wondered why beer (which I really like) sends me looking for a restroom many times the next day, but straight whiskey has not ever had the same effect. You guys are great. Hope I can help someone out someday. For now, I'll just keep on reading your great posts and maybe with a drink in hand. Cheers!! Joner 316

....a bottle of the best Pinot Grigio money can buy, and, just for old times's sake, a 6-pack of Amstel.
Yep, Mr. Amstel and I had a good relationship as well, he helped me out a lot, but we split over weight loss.

Mr. Amstel helped you out, and just because of a little weight issue, you split? How fickle!
I remain true to my Jack; we just don't get together as often.

I found out that a glass of wine drunk after dinner or even a shot of vodka or sth like that, actually helps, as if dinner was digested faster, and I do feel better then. However, I'm sure that beer and other fizzy drinks are intolerable BTW, I've got the feeling that alcohol can be good to me 'coz it helps to relax at least a little....:)
