I take Lexapro for depression and it hasn't had any effect, good or bad, on my IBS as far as I can tell. I developed IBS after I started the Lexapro, but I don't think that the meds exacerbated the IBS or in any way brought it on. I also take nortriptyline (tricyclic) for chronic headaches and have been for years. So my answer to the poll is that neither have worked for my IBS, though they are effective for depression and headaches!

I am IBS-C, however I am on Effexor, and it has greatly reduced the number of attacks/pains I have had from stress, which was my worst enemy. One of the side effects is constipation, so for me it has made my constipation worse, but that can be controlled. However, it may be beneficial for you. I hope HanSolo will reply to you, she is IBS-D and on Effexor? I believe...she may be able to tell you how it works for her. And again, these types of drugs tend to have different effects on everyone.

As Mickeymouse said, I'm on effexor. It seems to be fine, and paxil was too. But what works for me may not work well for you. I would say try other ones than the three you've already tried. I generally believe that if you're on the right SSRI for your depression/ocd/whatever, it will ease the anxiety and thus ease the symptoms of the IBS.

I take Citalopram (don't know the trade name) for depression as well as IBS. I've found that SSRIs help my IBS, partly because I'm a lot less stressy.
