OK I really need to get more of the insoluble fiber in my diet. I don't eat very much(insoluble fiber) except for a salad once in a while. Now I want to pass on the salad...causes to much stomach upset. So I was wondering if I had two peices of toast in the morning one white and one wheat, maybe with a banana or a soluble cereal. Does that sounds safe... what do you guys think?

How do you get your insoluble fiber? I'm starting to worry about my nutriton. I don't eat a lot of veggies or much fruit (out of fear of an attack, I love fruit and veggies!)I need some help..any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Can we eat carrots raw?? I'm thinking that's a no-no..am I right? I need ideal ladies!!! Thanks so much for your help!

Steph, I can tolerate whole wheat bread without any problems, so I have it a lot. I had 2 slices for breakfast toast, and made a sandwich at lunch with 2 more. Why not try moving into it slowly, as you suggested, try one slice of wheat and one white (but eat the white first) and see how you do.

As for fruit -- don't you like smoothies? They're absolutely delicious! You can get your fruit in smoothies with no problem at all.

And veggies: I make a lot of soup and throw veggies in it. I start with a good home-made stock, then I can throw anything in it -- and it's always delicious. (That canned stuff is another story altogether!)

Also, I found I can even have broccoli in a casserole with noodles. I made my crock pot bourbon chicken last night, and just before serving, I added broccoli to it. I ate the noodles first, then I had the broccoli -- and NO PROBLEMS!

Raw carrots? Raw ANYTHING? I couldn't do it.

Hope some of this helps for you.

Bev.

I'm in the same boat as you, Steph. I loooove veggies, but other than my safe carrots, potatoes, and squash I hardly touch anything else because it almost always seems to bother me. Then a couple of weeks ago I had an attack after eating a casserole made with mushroom soup (not "cream"), and all I could think of that bothered me was the mushrooms, even pureed! Since then I've been afraid to continue my quest for more insoluble veggies. But Bev is right, soups are a great way to go, and I plan to start trying that more soon. We can do this together!

Oh, one more thing! Rold Gold makes Honey Wheat pretzels that are made from mostly white flour but also have some whole wheat in them. They're sooo yummy, and since they have a white flour basis they never seem to bother me. That might be a good way to start out with some healthier snacking!

Hi Steph! I was feeling the same way you were about not getting enough soluble fiber or fruits and veggies, so I printed the lists of soluble and insoluble fiber foods at Heathers link: http://www.helpforibs.com/diet/fiber1.asp
I keep it near my shopping list and cookbooks in the kitchen. It makes for great reference at a glance and it's also a good reminder.

I'll tell you what I do in your case. For breakfast: I take a tablespoon of Fibercon in a weak cup of decaf coffee with non-dairy low fat creamer. Best to have the 2 slices of toast with white bread only, a ripe peeled pear (one of the few fruits that do not bother me), and some egg whites for protein. Instead of the toast, maybe white rice cereal with rice milk. I no longer worry about veggies, I gave them up outside a spoon of avocado, iceberg lettuce, a few garbanzos without skins, a few french string beans, a few pea pods, black olives. I survive on white rice, pasta (no tomato sauce), potatoes, sweet potatoes, chicken breast, salmon, lean fish, white bread, a little corn oil margarine. Eat an orange every third day. Have a ripe apple every fourth or fifth day, peeled. I will take the Fibercon before each meal. Do read the information on IBS in this program. I drink one Ensure a day. I avoid rough, gassy, fatty foods. And I don't eat much of anything. Am 82, 104#, 5'2" in good health, on no medication, energetic and lively. Hopefully, this helps. Yours, Pedie

I try to eat cooked veggies everyday. Also you could try apples(be carful), wheat germ (I normall have reactions to whole wheat but not to this), and potatoes.

Another thing you can try is the applesauce that has other fruits in it. I eat the Motts Healthy Harvest with no sugar. They have strawberry, country berry, and peach mango. I keep these in my desk at work for snacks.

You can also try the soy yogurts - they have some fruit also.

Do you like squash? You can try steamed green or yellow squash with the peel on. Squash is soluble, with the skin being insoluble, so you can get a little there. If it makes you nervous leaving the peel on, just peel it halfway. You can have striped squash. I like to have this when I'm also having rice as a side dish to bump up the soluble.

I only have raw carrots if they're in a salad, and I don't have problems with them. You can always steam carrots. They make a good side dish with a tiny bit of honey and maybe some cinnamon. Or plain is always good too.

Also, I think the one white, one wheat toast is a good idea.
