Alright, for the smarties out there:
As I've posted before, I have ulcers and my GI back home diagnosed IBS and wide colon. He gave me colcicine for reducing (over 2 weeks ago and no improvement). Now back in college, my campus doctor wonders if i don't have UC or some other inflammatory bowel disease, but now I'm pretty confident the GI would have spotted something in the colonoscopy (plus i've never had any blood in my stool). So, I'm in the process of being referred to a GI doctor here in town and wondering what to eat. I'm starting to learn that *gasp* maybe I should be eating a LOW-fiber diet, because my wide colon just builds up bulk and keeps it. My stools are not hard - just stagnant. In the meantime before I see the GI, would you guys approve of following a low fiber diet? What I'm doing now is just drinking water, juices, ensure, and tea/soymilk, and eating jell-o. sound reasonable?
thanks guys. i could use the feedback - i feel like i'm always having to do the self-diagnosing and self-treatment, and a little interaction feels very comforting. i love this board!

Evie, What causes a wide colon? I've never heard of this so am curious. The ensure has milk, and for IBS I've been told juices are out too. I don't know about the jello, but have been told not to do that either.

Jello is a no-no. I believe it's because of the dyes and preservatives.

You know, I dont know what causes it. I guess everybody's different, but we suspect I have it because I was a binge eater and I have long-lasting and chronic constipation. Thanks for your concern. Ensure has milk only in the form of whey protein, so I override and drink it in favor of nutrition. I am already very very thin and I need the calories, but I can't keep eating solid foods, because I am very uncomfortable right now. The juices I drink arent acidic - no orange or grapefruit - just apple and berry (by Apple&Eve - no added sugars or substitutes - good stuff!) and I have passionfruit nectar. I risk it with the soy milk 'cause it does have fiber, but I cannot live on tea and water alone! Do you have any suggestions as to what I should do?

Evie, welcome to the boards! Sorry you're not feeling well. Everything that I have learned on this board does not advocate a low fiber diet. For both constipation and diarrhea, it is better to have lots of soluble and insoluble fiber in your diet. Here's how it works (a link that explains it better than I can). If I were you, I'd visit the wonderful people on our Crohn's and Colitis board - they may also have some suggestions for you. soluble fiber web page
