First I'm am absolutely thrilled to have found this web site. I've been suffering since second grade and over the next thirty-five years since then I've been poked, prodded, scoped and x-rayed countless times only for doctors to tell me I was fine. A couple years back after suffering the indignity of another colon exam (BTW Not quite as painful as a kidney stone, I'm a guy so I don't know about child birth) a doctor put me on Levbid (Hyoscyamine sulfate) which offered moderate results at best. Since then I've lived on Imodium and Lactose pills after figuring out I was lactose intolerant but I knew there had to be other trigger but I just couldn't put my finger on them.

I've been on the soluble fiber foods for three days now and haven't had an attack. Three days without D is a rare occurrence in my life. I lost a job of seven years and a fiance' over IBS and finding this site has given me hope of living a normal life again. Thanks Heather and all others that participate in the boards you are a blessing.

My question is do I really have to take fiber supplements? I tried it a couple times and only got excruciatingly pain cramps and more D. I have to say I'm afraid to try again.

Hello and Welcom to the boards!! Isn't it wonderful to have these boards!!!

I think you should give the Acacia a chance. It is very mild and has a great amount of soluble fiber per dose! You can order it through this web page..look at the shop for IBS page. Try that and see how it goes. Also do a board search on Acacia. Many of us here use it and love it! I think its very important to use fiber supplements. So do give it a try and start out slow!!

Good luck!

Which soluble fiber supplement did you take? Because some of them are very tough on the digestive system! Metemucil and Fiber Choice are some that should be avoided. Check out this web page for more info: web page. Soluble fiber is really important, because it's what keeps the gut stabalized! Hopefully you can find a supplement that works for you, because they're really important!

If you feel like you can get enough soluble fiber from you food, then you should be okay. But, it is an easy way to make sure you get enough in. What kind did you try in the past? Check out the link Kree gave you. There's good info there. If you start out small and work your way up, you should be fine with the supplement.

Glad to hear you are feeling better. Three days without D - yay!

Hi and welcome! 3 days whooppee!! I'm also IBS/d so I have an idea of how it is. Myself I do not take fiber supplements, bad reaction to Metamucil about 10 years ago and never tried again. Then I talked to an acquaintance of mine who suffers like me and he says to try Prodiem. 1 tsp at night and 1 tsp in the am. I have not gotten my nerve up yet to try it ,(but have bought it), because I don't want to end up like before with cramping and D. I think during school break (spring break) I will try and see how I do. This will give me a week to adjust my body. for extra fiber I don't really worry about it. If I start to feel sluggish or need to up my fiber, I eat more fruit and veggies (cooked), more water and eat 1 slice of 60 % whole wheat bread with a slice of white bread first. Maybe you can try a different brand of fiber supplement, like Heather's acacia. Good luck Sue

HI and welcome to the IBS boards! I wanted to tell you that I've used Heather's diet alone, without
the fiber supplements and have not had an attack since July when I first started her program. Each person's case is so different I don't think you should assume you need to supplements especially if they
cause you discomfort. I know many people here swear by the peppermint or fennel tea, for example,
but it gave me horrible cramps when I tried them. So maybe just try the diet for a while and see
what works for you. Good luck!! Linda

I've tried Citracal recently and Metamucil awhile back. I have time off next week maybe I'll get the nerve up to try again. Thanks for the link too.

Hi Gerry,

I'm a "D" also, and I started on Heather's acacia early last month -- wow, what a difference, eh?! I really like it; so glad it works well for you too.
