has anyone had success with a combination of soluble fibre and lactulose? the doctor insists that this will eventually work, but after almost 3 weeks, i'm losing hope. thinking about adding milk of magnesia to the formula. the doctor says that as long as it's not senna or any other stimulant laxative, it should be okay. any thoughts?

Hi!
All laxatives are bad stuff. You colon can become addicted to it, can cause cramping & more C - viscious cycle. The best is to follow the EFI guidelines, lots of water, and exercise. Check here: web page
I think some of the C-ers have things they do when things get desperate, so maybe they can help you out. I'm a D-er, so wouldn't know for sure.

I understand what you mean about losing hope...my C has gotten more severe since taking a new medication and I am starting to think that soluble fibre + tons of water + stable diet will not equal a BM!
I recently read through a ton of posts on constipation which gave me a few ideas, also the recent suggestions from my post, here they both are: Boo on Constipation I miss pooping
I tried the senna...way too much cramping. Others have mentioned glycerine suppositories. Hopefully you find something that works for you in this post, I believe everyone is different. I am on a trial and error with different things now...
Hope you feel better soon!

I am a long time sufferer of constipation. Several years ago after trying EVERYTHING for C and I went to DR and told him he had to do something I couldn't go on living the way I was. So he gave me miralax. It worked for me. Now I'm trying to stop it because I want to get pregnant and am having a horrible time! Point of this is that it is available but I suggest it as a last resort!
It is a prescription, my insurance pays for it so I don't know what it cost. It took 3-5 days to start working for me. It did cause some extra bloating and a little cramping in the begginging. That went away after about 3-4 weeks. It does sometimes give me D. So it has been a pretty good answer to my C problems for several years now. I have become dependant on it though, and although I have been able to reduce the amount I take I haven't been able to stop it. If you are desperate, ask your DR about it but keep it in mind that it will probably be a forever thing. Feel free to ask any questions about it and I will do my best to answer.
As a now and then solution, I do reccomend the glycerin suppositories. Hope things start moving soon!

mickeymouse, the suppositories do help some, but often it takes 2 of them. i think they're better than other laxatives, but i wonder if they can be addictive like senna? anyway, thanks for your help.

thanks for your help. the suppositories are gentle enough, but do you think it's okay to take them daily?

Mickey, If I may ask, what are your IBS meds?
I've found ALL the antispasmotics to be highly constipating and throw me off when I have to take them. Nonetheless they are a must at times, especially when I eat out.

Oh, I recently started taking Effexor (antidepressant), been a little over two weeks now. I was also suggested an antispasomadic, however if that has constipating effects, I don't think it would go well with the Effexor. Being already a C, I didn't realize it would make me even worse. However, I must say, it has helped so far tremendously with my mood, thus reducing stress and attacks!
I was having a hard time there for a while, but I guess it does take time for your efforts to work with constipation. I have been doing MUCH better the past 3 days, I can actually go on my own now (without using suppositories/laxatives), so I am very happy. I feel like my body is getting used to the change now. However I had to really increase my fibre intake and water intake by alot.

Hi Gail! The suppositories are not like senna (which is a laxative), I think they are a stool softener. I don't know much about this stuff, but I don't believe you should depend on them for everyday use. Your body should get used to going on its own. You can also buy stool softener pills, I bought some (for just in case ) but haven't trid them yet. I wonder if they would have a better effect than the suppositories?
