I am helping a friend with the IBS diet and she is starting to experience some relief. She is addicted to coffee and black tea. I convinced her that coffee is an absolute no-no and she has managed to stay off it for about 5 days now and she thinks that is helping, along with the other things -- fiber supplements and the diet. She drinks black tea every morning, and at first I couldn't find anything about that so i assumed it was ok -- but now i did a search, and i just want to make sure that i understand this right. Caffeine is generally a trigger, but some people can tolerate it in tea? Or, would you say that only decaffeinated black and green tea is ok? And, do some people also have trouble with the tannin in tea but not most people? Thank you.

Back tea is just as big a trigger for me as coffee, even decaf.

The coffee is the real no-no. It has enzymes in it -- even the decaf. Heather's suggestion to me when I was trying to kick the coffee habit -- if I had withdrawals -- was to wean myself off it with just a little GREEN tea (because it has caffeine in it), but just for the withdrawals. I don't think black tea is a good thing any more than the green tea, because of the caffeine.
Your friend would do well to substitute herbal tea for the black. There are some great teas out there -- have her do a little experimenting. I love taste tests!

Pat your friend on the back for trying to stop the caffeine. It's a trigger whether it's in coffee, tea, or soda pop. Encourage her to "wean" her caffeine intake. Start with green tea powder to green tea to black to decaf green and black. The decaf varieties are great and are safe to have.
