Hi, I've been taking Effexor for Major Depression, I'm on a high dose and it doesn't seem to have any effect on my IBS at all. I recently swiched from life long IBS-C to D and my Effexor hasn't stopped it. Most anti-depressants have both constipation and diharrea on their list of side effects because different people get different side effects. You'll only know if it will help if you try taking it. However Effexor is known to be very touchy, if I forget to take my dose I start feeling withdraws with 8 hours. If it dosen't help you and you stop it you will get withdrawals and even at a low dose they can be intense. My grandma had bladder surgery and the hospital lost her Effexor, even though she is on the smallest dose she felt withdrawls too. It is up to you if you want to try it or not.

http://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-1836/effexor-oral/details#side-effects Just constipation. Couldn't find anyone on the reviews on webmd that it helps ibs pain as a plus darnit. Thanks for letting us know your personal and relative's experiences.
BTW, I am now at 25mg of the amitriptyline/elavil, seems like the frequency and intensity of the more mild pain I was having before the 25mg have gone down even more. The loperamide helps at 1/2 tab taken after the second BM stops anymore BMs for the rest of the day;Depending on what I eat, sometimes I'll take 1 whole. PMS seems to make the pain frequency and intensity go back up again though.

Don't know if you are still reading this but I've been on it for at least 7 years and it's never helped my symptoms at all.
