I'm a 60-yr old male with longstanding (decades) GI discomfort which has recently become worse. I've diagnosed myself with IBS-D, have appointments with my GP and Gastroenterologist pending. I'm responding to the dietary recommendations, probiotics (B. infantis, B. animalus, a variety of Lactobacilli), and Heather's Tummy Fiber is working wonders - but my symptoms are not typical based on reading others' accounts.
I generally have one BM/day, although when I eat the wrong things that can stretch out for several hours in and out of the bathroom with pain, gas, cramps, etc. The only time I have discomfort outside of the morning BM (marathon) is when I consume xylitol; that makes me crampy and gassy and I have a very watery BM at a time other than in the morning. Since following the dietary recommendations I've been in and out of the bathroom in the morning in a minute or two, with solid stools and no discomfort; it's a remarkable and welcome change. I should note that a lot of the foods on the forbidden list have been added back into my diet without problems. It seems fat is my major offender; I've not had the guts (ha ha) to test ice cream, red meat or pizza yet; those have been the few things I've identified in the past that have caused me problems.
I believe my self-diagnosis is correct based on my response to diet, but I'm interested in how common my particular variant of the condition is seen. I'm thinking of asking my Gastroenterologist for a fecal transplant from a skinny person when he does my upcoming endoscopy (only half-kidding)
What can anyone tell me about my particular set of symptoms?
Thanks.
