GERD and IBS-C

I have both IBS-C and GERD. I've been doing fodmaps for close to a year and have tried to implement a few of the suggestions from this site. My doctor just took me off Zantac after six months of heavenly nearly no pain! Now, I'm doubled over again.
So, I am going to let go of fodmaps and give this food plan a try (though I cannot tolerate so many foods!). I just wondered if there are any special things to think about if one has both. I didn't see reference to this other than not to use the peppermint.
For instance,
* Can I use turkey burgers? It says only white meat, but I don't think it's all white meat.
* Oat bran is not ok? But oatmeal is?
* My migraine med is fioricet, which does have caffeine. Nothing else works. Could taking that once or twice a week ruin any progress?
Thanks!
Susan

Hi Susan - not to worry, I think this is more easily do-able than you think.
Check here http://www.helpforibs.com/news/newsletter/07/071007.html#askheather for basic diet info with IBS and reflux concerns.
For your questions:
Turkey burgers are fine but it is the fat you need to watch out for. Ground turkey often has tons of skin and dark meat, so very high fat. You want ground white meat only - you might have to ask your supermarket meat department (or, even better if you have a local option, a butcher shop) to grind skinless turkey breast for you.
Oat bran is the insoluble portion of oats. Be very careful here. Oatmeal has both soluble and insoluble, and tends to be a tolerable whole grain for IBS (brown rice, barley, and cornmeal are some others). Instant oatmeal will be safest, as it's been chopped/pressed into little bits, mechanically breaking down the insoluble fiber before you even eat it.
I wouldn't worry about the migraine med. Caffeine is a GI stimulant, but not necessarily a huge trigger across the board. If you can take that med with some soluble fiber food that will help.
And a migraine itself is much more likely to set off IBS symptoms, as it is a serious physical body stressor, than the caffeine in the med.
XOXO H
