I have just started the IBS diet. I am afraid that a diet so heavy in empty calories will cause me to gain weight, not to mention feeling hungry all the time because they do not leave you satisfied the way proteins and high fiber veggies do. I aim for 1200 cal. a day, and had eaten that much by lunchtime with hot cereal, french bread, and a banana smoothie! I have always eaten healthy and jog every day, and this diet goes against everything I've learned about weight management, so I am worried. Any insight or encouragement is welcome. I want this to work so I'm not in such pain anymore.

Your focus is a soluble fiber foundation - and soluble fiber has no calories. The only "empty" calories are found in refined sugar. You also don't need to reduce or eliminate proteins - just stick to the safe ones: skinless white poultry meat, seafood, egg whites, well-cooked/pureed beans and lentils, soy, finely ground nuts with a soluble fiber foundation, etc.

And you need to use your soluble fiber foundation to safely, carefully add in as much insoluble fiber foods (those veggies you're talking about) as possible.

Check the IBS diet FAQ here Won't eating this make me fat? for this very question.

And of course, do watch your portion control, drink plenty of water, and exercise.

Best,
Heather
