Hi All, this is my first post here, although I've been lurking for months. I have been using Heather's products for a while. Such a wonderful site!
One of my worst trigger foods seems to be tomato sauce/juice. I haven't even tried to eat it in several months. I REALLY miss pastas and soups with it! My question is, if I took Prelief (an OTC natural acid-reducer that is marketed for heartburn and bladder problems), would that help prevent an attack from the tomato sauce? There is even a photo of spaghetti with tomato sauce on the packaging. I assume it's the acid that causes my IBS attacks. Has anyone tried this product for IBS? (I do not have heartburn, btw.)

Welcome to the board,
Acid foods usually aren't IBS triggers although they can be a problem for individuals with GERD.
It is usually the seeds and skins of tomatoes that are the trigger. Commercial tomato sauces frequently contain the seeds and other ingredients that can be triggers.
I make a tomato sauce from pure tomato paste that doesn't give me any problem. You might try making a tomato sauce from pure tomato paste and see if it works for you.
Preleif contains calcium glycerophosphate which is a mineral supplement containing equal amounts of calcium and phosphorus. There aren't any third party trials to show the product is an effective antacid. It likely isn't any more effective than other OTC antacids that contain calcium carbonate such as Rolaids.

I use an adhoc recipe that varies depending on my mood Generally here is how it goes for a serving for 2 people.
Warm 1/2 cup homemade chicken stock with 1/4-1/2 cup red wine. Add herbs and spices such as basil, oregano, etc and garlic and onions if you can handle them. Let stand for 30-60 minutes to let the flavors from the herbs and spices infuse the mixture. Strain mixture, add 3-4 tablespoons of pure tomato paste, salt and pepper to taste and simmer on low heat until sauce reaches consistancy you want. You can always add more stock to thin or more tomato paste to thicken sauce. Add cooked carrots or other cooked veggies that you can handle and diced cooked chicken, tuna or other suitable protein. Serve over pasta or noodles.
That is the general approach. It can be modified to personal taste preferences.

Red wine? Alcohol is not good for ibs, right? Do you make an exception for it? I'd be afraid to use it. And if I use Trader Joe's Organic chicken broth, it already has the spices in it. Thanks for the recipe.
I have been adding about a teaspoon of the paste to the broth for a tomato flavor and then some rice or mashed potatoes. Tastes pretty good that way.
Cheers.

When you heat wine the alcohol evaporates. Alcohol is the trigger so it is removed from the sauce

Thank you for your reply! I figured it was the acidity of it, because orange juice tends to do the same thing to me.
