I have read the posts here on digestive enzymes and the general consensus is that maybe Beano has some redeeming value (for some people that is). My question is has anyone had problems with using them? I swear I GET heartburn from taking them, but, yet everything I read here and online just touts them as the wonder drug and that they can't cause any problems???? My doctor continues to highly recommend I take them. Anyone??

Shelgirl said Beano - although I'm not sure they are technically speaking "enzymes" (Syl, I'm sure you'd know.) Personally I've never gotten heartburn from Beano, but I also never found it all that effective.

Where these digestive enzymes recommended by your doctor? Do you have GERD?

Yes, recommended by doctor...No not diagnosed with GERD. IBS with weight loss and lots of indigestion both upper and lower GI....have really had problems lately with eating. I get alot of pains in upper GI tract...also have very low adrenal which we are working on as well. Just not so sure about enzymes...this is the 2nd one I've been on and I just don't think they are helping.

Hi Shelgirl, I haven't looked at Beano in a few months, but I'm almost positive it contains gluten. If so, that could be causing the problem. I looked at them once when I first found out about my IBS, but never bought them because of my Celiac. Anybody have a bottle they could look at to list the ingredients for us? KellyJean

The Beano I have listed the following ingredients: Alpha-galactosidase enyzme, colloidal silicon dioxide, gelatin, magnesium stearate, mannitol, micro-crystaline cellulose and starch.
On the CVS web site they list the other ingredients as cellulose gel, mannitol, invertase, potato starch, magnesium stearate, colloidal silica, gelatin.
Wheat is not an obvious ingredient. However, the CVS web site says "Contains: Cod, flounder, redfish, wheat. If you are pregnant or nursing a baby, ask a doctor before use."

Syl, you have Beano, do you feel it helps? Or have you used any other enzymes with any success? Or anyone else?

Generally speaking most digestive enzymes are destroyed by the acid the stomach unless they are enteric coated so they can pass through to the small intestine unchanged. Enzymes from raw, unprocessed foods such as papain from papaya and bromelain from pineapple and in microorganisms found supplemental as digestive aids are digested when consumed just like any other component of food. They are not active in the GI tract and they are unlikely to aid with digestion. Also, some digestive enzymes supplements contain enzymes like cellulase which helps digest cellulose but only in ruminant animals and some insect . It does not work in humans. Supplements frequently contain enzymes which the body is capable of producing in sufficient quantities without need for supplements.
Lactase and Beano are two digestive enzymes that are not destroyed by the stomach acid. Some people find they work well. Beano has not helped me.
You might find the information on Columbia University's Go Ask Alice about digestive enzyme supplements of interest and this newspaper article Enzyme hype gives some people a headache .
