What to eat?

Without making this way too long, I have IBS. Have had it for a long time. For the most part, it has been manageable. However, two weeks ago I was knocked off my rear and straight onto the toilet. LOL I still have a sense of humor though! Anyhow, it is my gastroenterologist's opinion that gastroenteritis has entered my life and getting my gut out of this process may take some time. Anyhow, I'm taking antispasmodics, antidiarrheals and have taken 4 nightly doses of 10 mg of Elavil thus far. I'm doing better, but still having more pain and D than I want.

OK, so my question... what do I feed my husband and I? I have ODed on mashed potatoes, rice, applesauce, bananas, fresh French bread, chicken and oatmeal with an occasional Eggo here and there. I'm also doing a packet of Benefiber in my drink at supper. But, I'm really hungry for other stuff now. I have the problem of having to feed hubby, too. I will not be cooking with soy for right now. Two factors: the cost and the fact that I don't think I can get DH to eat it. I have tried soy milk and rice milk and I could not stand it.

I have ordered Heather's book and hopefully it will get here next week, but I need some ideas for meals now -- everyday items that I can get at my local grocery store. The best store in our town is only a C grade store so you can imagine my options. What about frozen meals or other easy to prepare items that aren't so challenging on the gut? I'm not afraid of cooking, but I do have limited time for food preparation.

Thanks for reading this.

Hi Amy!

Check out the recipes in the IBS Recipe board. You'll be amazed at the selection -- and they're REALLY good! My hubby loves everything I've made -- I don't tell him they're "IBS Food," but he asks so I confess. Still, he hasn't found a dish yet that he doesn't like. Of course, there ARE certain hubbies of some of us IBS-ers -- whose names I'll leave out here, but if a certain Krazee Gal reads this, she'll know of whom I refer Ah-Hum -- but try one of our easy soups to start out -- really, you'll be amazed at how good they are (of course, I'm prejudiced to my Lentil Soup with Sausage, but there are a lot of other good ones too)

I don't eat much frozen stuff -- unless it's home made that's been frozen by me -- so I can't help you much here. You said you don't like soy, so I won't recommend the FANTASTIC Amy's Frozen Soy Cheese Pizza (okay, guys, bear with me here -- this gal is new and hasn't heard it yet! )

Anyway, go into our recipe index that Magnificent Mags just updated for us -- and check 'em out! And WELCOME!

Bev

You know, we actually do have a few of Amy's frozen thingies. I've not tried soy as far as food goes (other than milk). I have been really craving pizza, too. Thanks for the reply and many thanks for the welcome!

I'm off to check out the recipes.

Wait a minute -- be careful! A lot of Amy's frozen stuff contains DAIRY. In fact, MOST of it does! I said what I like is Amy's Frozen SOY CHEESE Pizza. Her other pizza contains dairy, unless you go for the "no-cheese" pizza -- we tried it and can vouch that it's HORRIBLE -- we threw it out!

Just wanted to let you know that with your suggestion for Amy's Soy Cheese Pizza, I went specifically to the health food store to get it, but realized how expensive it was ($6.75) and couldn't bring myself to buy it. I'm afraid that if I buy it, I'll love it and be tempted to pay for it all the time. I think it's disgusting how much they charge for some of this stuff. I can't believe that eating healthier is more expensive. It should be the other way around.
Who knows, I'll probably give in one day and buy it.

I like Amy's Frozen meat loaf dinner, but it has
soy in it and it's expensive too. Amy's is sold
here in almost all the stores. Maybe it's less
expensive than in a health food store?

Natalie, maybe you could make your own pizzas using english muffins, pizza sauce, and soy cheese. I do that at least every couple of weeks! I love Amy's pizzas too, but I agree that they get awfully expensive. This was you can have one once in a while as a treat and still get your pizza the cheap way in between!
