I recently read in you book "first year" p 5 upper GI symptoms are not part of the syndrome. I am so confused now. I have had stomach issues called by doctors IBS for at minimum 15 years. I have had heart burn realted symptoms, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas, pain you name it--I have had the ultrasound for gallstones--negative, many blood tests-liver, celiac bacterial, I have not yet had the upper GI scope deal (was too scared) but probably should...but everything I was told and everything I read screamed IBS...this is the first time I have seen that upper GI discomfort would NOT be IBS and I experience a great deal of that but all my other symptoms are soo IBS. The pain on the upper right has been for soo long that I have told myself none of this as dibilitating as it seems at times can be too serious because I ahve dealt with it sooo long that if it was overly serious something more would have come of it by now---I have never had a visual blood issue, fever, vomiting etc...but I do have nausea at times, and back /neck/joint pain often...not sure if related. This is so frustrating--I was so excited to find your site and I have already ordered products (have not started using them yet) but now feel like I may be on the wrong road??? Help

Welcome to the board,
What Heather likely means is IBS does not occur in the small intestine or stomach which is the upper GI tract. By definition IBS occurs in the 'bowel' or colon.
However, it isn't uncommon for IBS pain to be located in the upper right hand quadrant the location of the ascending colon. This is not the upper GI tract. That is where I experience most of my pain however, sometimes when I have a serious attach I may have pain there and across transverse colon. On this web page there is a picture of the colon with the various parts labelled for reference.
