Hello, I am new to this group and the IBS diet after recently being diagnosed with IBS. I have been eating yellow squash and zucchini for dinner for several weeks now and would like to changed vegetables, but am afraid that something like spinach or asparagus or green beans will cause a flare up and/or diarrhea. How do you know what vegetables are safe? I had a bad reaction to yams and peas.

Welcome to the board,

I have troubles with veggies too. Many individuals with IBS-D do. A veggie that has never failed me is peeled boiled carrots.

Unfortunately, the only way to figure out if you can handle a particular veggie is to give it a try. However, it might be wise to choose veggies you can peel to remove the high IF skin and cook until very tender. I definitely could eat spinach, asparagus, green beans or peas. I can eat small amount of yam when the skin is removed and they are well cooked. However, I notice I have to take off more of the skin than one might think one needs to because the IF layer seems to penetrate quite deep.

Good luck

You better try yams and cooked peas again. I can't believe they would be harder to handle than summer squash, unless you are fructose intolerant. Definitely try well-cooked green beans, spinach and asparagus- but with a SF source like rice or pasta or bread first and with the veg. Maybe to be ultra safe (remember sometimes our food touchiness is a little in the head- if we get nervous we can get sick on safe food- it happened to me on Friday!!! ) take pep caps first and your SFS, then have some SF and your cooked veggie- just a little. Do it when you are at home and not going anywhere. My guess is that if you think you'll be fine, you will! Good luck.

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

That is good news. I love peas! It is necessary (or helpful) to puree the peas before I eat them?

Peas never sat well with me but green beans were just fine, even when my IBS was at its worst.
