I was curious to know if anyone else has problems with protein powder and IBS? I have been working out for months, and have lost a bit of weight and gained some muscle. I wanted to supplement my protein intake, so I bought some Muscle Milk which is lactose free. I make it with soy so I am not getting the diary. I can't tell if that is causing me IBS problems or if it is something else I am eating.

Muscle Milk is whey-based, with lots of other stuff in it:
http://www.cytosport.com/products/muscle-milk/muscle-milk-powder. I know this would really bug my tummy. Mixing it in soy milk like you do would also give me gas. I use a vanilla-flavoured hemp protein powder in my oatmeal and find it very tolerable.

Thanks for the suggestion. Where is a good place to get the hemp and is there a certain brand you suggest? I looked at some and some reviews say that they clump at the bottom.

Hi, I get mine at the health food store. I'm in Canada so the brand names might be different, but the ones I like are Living harvest and Manitoba Harvest.

I'm not sure about clumping since I mix mine into oatmeal, not a smoothie. But I've never had any problem with them.

Actually...I was wondering...I think the Egg Powder is starting to give me trapped gas.

1) Can that happen?
2) I NEED 200 grams of protein a day...so what else are my options?

I used rice protein powder; however it is still a meal replacement and too ucky to eat with food other than the smoothie I put it in. I am going to start up with it again now.

LM...thanks...I had a big question.

I am VERY concerned about a recent development, as mentioned, the egg protein.
In the past, I noticed if I had Egg beaters for breakfast too many times a week I would get bloated/trapped gas.

Since I have upped my protein intake, I know need 1 gram per day, and it is crucial that I get some protein for breakfast.
I have been relying on anywhere from 2-4 shakes a day (4 on workout days).
Within the last several days my gut has become bloated-which I believe is due to trapped gas.
Prior to this my gut was pretty gassy.
So I am concerned that the Egg Powder IS causing gas/trapped gas/bloating.

I was curious if
1) You have heard of this or if this is possible?
2) What does this indicate...I have a sensitivity and must moderate intake?
3) What is the solution as if I scrap Egg Powder it will be very hard to meet protein requirements. I have no idea what to have in the AM besides an Egg Powder shake.
-Do you either know something which alleviates this problem OR any other suggestions for protein substitutes...especially in the AM breakfast?

Which Rice Protein Powder?
Most of the ones I heard of were Brown Rice...which I know I could not handle.

I did find online white rice http://gnhealthfoods.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=260&zenid=540d5a424be05bf5bfa1a4a43f264469 and even pea protein powder http://www.amazon.com/Pea-Protein-Unflavored-2-lbs/dp/B001DB4MFO/ref=pd_sim_hpc_3.

I am curious, what is your opinion?
Do you think these are more likely to be IBS friendly if I get problems when taking Egg White Powder too much?
Or is it same old?

I haven't used egg protein powder, but I know that eggs period gives me serve trapped gas, to the point I have to lie down because I'm in so much pain. That includes egg whites and egg beater whites, so I would stay away from egg and stick with either the rice, or as suggested hemp.

I already told you like 6 times that protein powder is not easy to digest. It is heavy in the gut and you just can't handle a lot of it. The brown rice source of protein is not like eating brown rice-it is just from brown rice. Any protein powder is going to possibly cause gas. At least rice doesn't have the sulfur eggs do and isn't grown in little cages.
Don't think protein powders will be any more tolerable than getting protein from foods like nuts, fish, tofu and egg whites. It is also possible that powders mess up your regularity more than food does.

OK LM...you got through to me!
Look it's hard because I am trying to gain muscle (which requires protein) while helping IBS.
I got bodybuilders scolding me for not wanting to use Egg Powder...telling me that Rice Powder is garbage.

Look...I said in another thread...I am VERY concerned about Brown Rice Powder. Reason being is in the past I have had cereal or other products with Brown Rice Flour and I have defintely noticed bloating.

So my questions

1) You think having the Egg Powder shakes COULD cause C and B for me?
-If so, would switching to a Rice powder help allievate it?

2) What am I supposed to do to get the protein I need?
I need about 175-200 grams per day because of my weight (175) and goals.
-Are you saying having ANY protein shake can cause issues?
-Or are you saying if I have a few shakes a day...I should be fine (think 2)?

3) Which protein powder is best
-Would Rice/Pea powder also be less likely to cause irregularity and trapped gas?
-I have felt more irregular with bloating and trapped gas since I started having 2-4 Egg Powder shakes a day.
-This is not much different than when I would have an egg beater omlet daily.

4) Any truth to these statements?
Quote:

-First of all, the rice protein is complete garbage. don't use it.

-Second of all, Pea Protein has a very poor usability score or biologigal value (bv), meaning you will only be able to use about 50% of what you eat, verses 100% with egg protien.

-There is more. Pea protien has NONE of the of the gwroth factors contained within egg protien, which are necessary for optimal growth. This is one of the primary reason animal protien is so much better at stimulating growth.

-Also, it is very low in the aminos that are the most critical for growth. This is very important, as surplusses of certain aminos can stimulate growth. Pea protien does a job of it.

Would then Rice powder compromise protein intake/results?

I have never heard of pea protein. IMO rice is the easiest to digest vs egg, soy, nut, and especially whey.
I looked back to my protein journal notes and have this data.
chicken breast 30g
fish 6g per ounce
egg white 4g
tofu 1/2c 20g 1oz 2.3g
beans 1/2c 10g
soy beans 1/2c 14g
PB 2T 8g
almonds 1/4c 8g
peanuts 1/4c 9g
pepitas (pumpkin seed kernels) 1/4c 19g
vegetables 2g per cup
potato 9g per 8oz
cereal 4g per 1/2c
turkey 1c 40g
1c 'burger' crumbles 22g
6 shrimp 18g
trail mix 1c 20g
barley 1c 19g
bulgar wheat 1c 17g

There are a lot of food choices to add protein! Then you can keep the supplement powder down to 1 serving per day which will keep the gut happy.

Here was one day of my diet journal
protein smoothie with soy milk and fruit 20g with fiber
PB toast raisins 2 graham crackers 14g
luna bar 10g
odwalla bar 6g
veggies and dip 8g
salmon, rice and asparagus 26g
choc soy milk with fiber 7g
equals 91 grams and that wasn't trying very hard.

Yes any protein shake can make you feel yucky but you might be able to still use it. I recommend trying to improve your diet to have more fruits, veggies, lean protein and grains to help your C and B. Really helping the C makes you less B so working on that good fiber amount will help and a good, healthy diet is where to get it.

OK...well if I assume that drinking protein shakes is making me more C and B...then how do I get enough protein?
I need at least 175 grams per day (as I weigh 175 and you need at least 1 gram to grow muscle).

I can get 50 at lunch and dinner with whole foods.
How do I get the rest?
I need some source of protein at breakfast (can't do egg beaters that often)....so what do I do?

This is where I feel like SCREAMING!!!!
It's like the IBS constricts me so much...I need 175 grams of protein..yet doing so has caused issues.

I am hoping Pea Protein will help over Egg Protein.
I am going to need 2-4 drinks a day to get my protein unless you know another way to 175, since I can't drink Soy Milk or have PB.

Seriously...what do I have at breakfast (if I can't have a shake)...or as my last meal of the day (if I can't have a shake)...to get my protein?
You need to have 1 gram of protein per pound spread throughout the day...and since I can't have milk/PB/cheese/nuts...those shakes allow me to do so.

Now what do I do...or is this just impossible?

I bought some hemp protein, so far not too bad, but I am worried about the insoluble fiber.
