I have a question. I have IBS-C, and in reading EFI, bananas and applesauce are safe foods. So are rice, pasta, potatoes. Aren't they all worse for constipation? I am confused

It is my understanding that the EFI diet is meant to stabilize the gut. Soluble fiber in the foods you mentioned keeps the gut from spasming too much (in the case of diarrhea) or from seizing up completely (in the case of constipation). I've had great success with constipation relief using the acacia fiber supplement and following the diet. However, it's especially important to help relieve constipation by consuming as much insoluble fiber as you can tolerate (but always eat with soluble fiber). Exercise and lots of water will also help with constipation, in combination with the diet and a fiber supplement.

And magnesium... it's helped me quite a bit.

I use the acacia fiber and I eat potatoes and pasta with no problem. The only time my C bothers me is when I eat some trigger food like dairy or fatty food. If you follow the diet, I think its the combination of foods that helps, not just one individual food. Obviously you wouldn't eat potatoes and that it for your meal.
