It's difficult to change an ingrained pattern of behavior. I know it has been difficult for me to change my pattern of behavior in regard to food. Because food serves us on an emotional level as well as physical, it becomes much more difficult to make lasting and satisfying changes. I think that IBS makes us feel that we no longer have control over what we eat - the IBS is "controlling" us and what we eat. No one likes to be controlled by something or someone else.

I find it is easier for me if I plan ahead and keep foods ready that I can eat when I'm overwhelmingly hungry or just plain tempted by something else. I try to keep safe snacks on hand - even in my backpack or handbag. This really helps me because I tend to get really cranky when my blood sugar drops. My poor husband has learned that when I say "I'm hungry", it's not just an idle observation.

I don't know if you are in a situation where you are able to cook or bake for yourself. If you can cook your own foods and bake your own treats, you can have more control over what ingredients are in your foods. For example, you could then have safe muffins on hand to combat the temptation to have an unsafe donut.

The biggest thing is not to beat yourself up when you make mistakes. Learn from them. Think about what you can do to take control of your eating situations. I think if you really think this through, you will be able to come up with some short term and long term solutions.

Blessings

You are so right. Years ago there were no center aisles of a supermarket to get your load of junk food. There may have been a farmer's market, or you grew your own food. Most baked their own bread, actually made a real meal for their family, instead of something out of a box loaded with poisons.

It is a given that you must cook with IBS, if you want to feel your best. You have to control those ingredients...that is just the way it is. We have come so far from the way it used to be. No wonder there is IBS, colitis, crohns, heartburn, GERD, etc. We have to get back to the basics and then maybe we will be well. I think everyone needs to slow down and share meals with family and friends...home cooked that is, not quick pick-up or delivery.

The only person I live with that will eat 2 or 3 of the recipes I make is my mom. Everyone elsel doesn't like them because they says the recipe is lacking something or that it doesn't have much flavor. I make the recipes exactly how I'm supposed to. I use appleasauce for canola oil in the strawberry bread adapted recipe from this site. I eat soy ice cream and the only person that will touch that is my mom and only when they are out of regular ice cream. I made the variation-Chiken and dumplings from this site. My boyfriend said it doesn't have any flavor. I will keep making and eating those things. Its better than plain potatoes or plain skinless chiken. I can stop focusing on food as long as I don't too bored..so I'll make recipes alot. I'll eat and just stop obsessing on what I can't have. Plus I want to eat healthier cuz I'd like to lose some weight and start working out as soon as I start feeling a little better.
