Kappy,I have been off line for a while due to family stuff and back issues. I read your post on 3/05/09. You mentioned that you had lost weight on Heathers IBS diet. I am sooo frustrated. I just cant seem to loose weight. I am C, so I often feel extra bloated and huge, on top of the weight gain. Can you tell me in a little more detail just what you eat? I am sick of feeling so uncomfortable in my body. I am going to be having a third back surgery in two weeks and I have not been able to exercise except for minimal walking. I am afraid of being even heavier when this all gets done, not to mention how C I get on all the pain meds. If you would be so kind, please help me out with some further detail of your diet and how you lost your weight. Thanks, I'm feeling like a slug! LindaJane

Hi there, LindaJane! I'm so sorry to hear about your back surgery, I hope it all goes well. I too get bloated and frustrated with my symptoms, but the better you eat, the better you'll feel. Also, when I get a distended belly, I just tell everyone I got 6 months pregnant over night I usually get a laugh. Don't let the distention ruin your self-esteem, I know it's hard not to, but remember, it's not fat just bloating!

I think the main reason I lost weight at first was because I was in so much pain that I didn't want to eat. Now, I know I have to eat, but It's fairly easy to stay on track. I eat breakfast every morning and I snack frequently. I know that doesn't sound right, but when I'm dieting, I keep my calorie intake under 1200/day. I also exercise for at least 30 minutes and sometimes more. I eat about every 2 1/2 to 3 hours, but each small meal is under 300 calories except breakfast. The following is an example of a daily menu when I am dieting:

Breakfast:
Oatmeal (1 serving) With about 2-3T Acacia Fiber
1 Cup Soy Milk
1 Cup V8
1 Cup berries (us C people need the IF in the berries to kick the day off right.
Estimated Calories: 350

Snack 9:30 or 10:
1 Serving Stonyfield farms O'Soy Yogurt
1 Cup of fruit or a small piece of fruit (usually grapes or a banana or some strawberries)
Estimated Calories: 200

Lunch 12noon:
Baked sweet potato (small one)
water packed tuna in the pouch or brothy soup
Estimated Calories: 200-250

Snack 2:30 or 3:
1 Serving dry roasted edamame (or some other kind of protein that you like and is safe)
1 Cup of fruit or a small piece of fruit (usually a peeled apple or a banana if I didn't eat my banana that morning I have a banana and apple a day, it keeps the DR. away )
Estimated Calories: 200

Supper: As soon as I get home in the evening cause I'm usually hungry:
Oatmeal (1 Serving)
Soy Milk
or
baked/grilled chicken 1/2 breast
a little bit of rice or half a baked potato or 1/2 acorn squash (just some type of soluble fiber to buffer the greens)
1/2 cup of green beans (or veggie of choice)
sometimes a side salad with some light olive oil and vinegar (just a touch I usually dip my fork in the dressing and then get a bite of salad, its just enough flavor to be able to eat it)
Sometimes, I cook out of the EFI cookbook or I find recipes to cook
or
i also eat a lot of fish like salmon, tuna, crappy aka white perch
I like to cook spinach in the skillet with just a touch of olive oil and put over some noodles with 1/2 fish fillet
Estimated calories: 250-300

You do not have to strictly follow this diet, you can change it up as you see fit. But, if you keep your calorie consumption around 1200/day, you should lose about 1-2 lbs/week and this is the way to lose the weight and keep it off. Remember, every bite you steal from someone else's plate has calories, so if you aren't careful, you can add on calories without realizing it, especially taste-testing when cooking. Example: 1 french fry is 10 calories so 10 french fries is 100 calories. Oh what I wouldn't give for a large french fry, cheeseburger, and coke right now!!!!!!! Here is a website that you can look up caloric information on www.nutritiondata.com . It's very interesting and you can also see if you are taking in the right vitamins and minerals your body needs everyday.

About the exercise, you say you can walk a little, every little bit helps. Try to start out walking 10 minutes 2 times a day and then go up from there.

I hope this helps!

Kappy, WOW! You really went the extra mile with this and I so appreciate it. Reading what you eat makes me realize that I need to reduce my caloric intake but it also shows me that my portions are too big. I keep thinking I am reducing my intake but after seeing what equals 200-300 calories, it really isn't a whole lot.

I have been using Benefiber. Do you think that Benefiber does the same thing as the Acacia fiber? I have put off buying it because it is easier for me to pick up the Benefiber at my local drug store.

I noticed that you eat fruit several times a day. Do they bother you? I eat quite a few banana's but need to get the berries and apples back into my diet. I was thinking that in order to eat the raw fruits and vegetables that I needed to eat SF with them. I have been making Heather's zuccini bread, banana bread and chocolate applesauce breads to eat as my snacks but I have no idea how many calories they have and of course they are delicious and very easy to overeat. I have not been eating enough fruits to be sure! Can you eat the canned fruits in lite syrup or is raw better?

One more question, when you eat a serving of oatmeal do you use 1/2 cup of dry or 1/4 cup? Hey,Thanks a ton for your help, I keep trying to figure this out and I suppose if I never give up that I will eventually see results. I hope alot of people read your diet and add to it as to what they eat. I know it would help alot of people in my situation.

I haven't tried the Benefiber, I just feel like I'm getting more from the Acacia fiber.

I eat mostly raw fruits, but canned in juice or light syrup is ok too. The raw fruits don't bother me at all. Actually, if I don't eat them, I don't go. The yogurt and edamame are my buffer SF when I eat fruits, but like I said, I really don't need them. Fruits and veggies are the base of my diet. The breads could be a good snack if you could limit your intake to a slice with some fruit. I think in the cookbook it has the calories/serving listed. See if that will help with your intake.

On the oatmeal, I use 1/2 cup dry with 1 cup water. That's one serving (150 calories) if I only eat oatmeal for supper, i eat 3/4 cup dry to 1 1/2 cup water (225 calories). That usually keeps me going until bed time.

No problem, at all! I hope you stick with it, it really helps to eat healthy! I feel so much better with much more energy when I don't eat crap. But the breads really aren't crap they just need to be eaten in moderation.

Thanks for your comments too, I'm sure others will put there opinions in too. I hope they do! Have a good evening, and hang in there! God has a plan for all of us! I have a meeting now, so I'll talk to ya tomorrow!

Kappy, I have to applaud you for getting me back on the right tract. I really needed the information you gave me on how often to eat and how many calories for each mini meal. I "re-started" my "diet" again today and feel excited. You gave me the jump start that I needed to not give up and really take this thing to the next level of seriousness. I am hoping that if I can get on track between now and April 14, when I go in for my next back surgery that I will be better off than I was for the last ones. All of the pain meds on an empty stomach really bind me up for DAYS!! It is painfully awful!

When you eat rice, do you stick to white or do you have brown? Also with potatoes, I know that a sweet potato or yam is better for your health but is white better for those of us with IBS/C?

I did look in Heathers book and 1 slice of the chocolate applesauce bread is 182 calories, so today I had a slice with a cup of hot tea for a snack. The bread does have raisins in it, but do I still need to add a piece of fruit? I know if I do that it will put me over 200 calories for a snack. What are your thoughts?

I'm glad I could help out . Eating healthy should get you back on track and definitely make you feel better!

I think either sweet or white potatoes are fine for IBS/C. They are both about the same. I just enjoy the sweet potatoes more.

I do have eat white and brown rice. It just depends on what I have in the kitchen.

I think you are fine with the bread with raisins in it. If you want to add a little more IF, you could eat a half cup of raspberries (30 calories/4 fiber) or half cup of strawberries (20 calories/2 fiber). That would put you around 200, maybe a few more, but it's fruit, so you should be ok.

I have to tell you that I am feeling so much better now that I have really cut back on my food portions. My stomach does feel raw if I eat a half of peeled apple two or three times a day or other raw veggies. (Why is that?)

I am really enjoying the oatmeal and the 1/2 cup serving tides me over much better than the smaller serving I was eating.

I have found a few new recipes on this site that people send in. I was really craving a good cookie to go with all of the hot tea I drink. I found a chocolate chip one and used the Giradelli chocolate chips, ( I thought I read that someone said they are ok.) I guess I wondered what your thought was about some of these recipes that come in to this forum, are they IBS approved by Heather or are we assuming that they are okay to have. I want so much to do this thing right especially since I am seeing "results" and I must add that for a C, results are truly amazing!!

I want to send you a menu of what I have been eating and see what you or anyone else thinks about it.

Thanks for the encouragement! It really has helped.

That is great you are doing so well! I am very proud of you! Eating healthy really makes a difference.

I don't know why your tummy feels "raw" that is odd. Maybe because it is not used to the foods you are eating.

I think that the recipes on the site are truly IBS ok. If they are in the recipe index, then an administrator probably put it there (aka heather, erin, etc.)

I am glad you are seeing such excellent results! Keep it up!

Please send me a menu! I will be delighted to look at it!
