Hi there.
My wife has been diagnosed with quite high LDL -148 cholesterol. Her HDL is fine-76. This condition is primarily genetic, as she already eats a very healthy vegetarian(with some fish)lower fat diet, exercises regularly, and does not smoke.
I use acacia fiber to help control IBS, and was wondering if there has been any link to establish the effectiveness of Acacia fiber in helping to reduce cholesterol?
Any suggestions would be helpful as we have given ourselves 3 months to lower her cholesterol by natural means before letting the doctor prescribe drugs. thank you! Jpc123

I don't think any big scientific studies are in the works to determine that. Basically only big drug companies can push their products to get such tests. But soluble fiber and soluble fiber supplements, like acacia, have been studied and proven to lower cholesterol. The SF acts as a sponge to remove the bad cholesterol from the bloodstream. That is why oatmeal is so great for cholesterol. Definitely try her on acacia. It is the best quality SFS you can buy.
-------------------- IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

Wow! I didn't know that soluble fiber could do this, what a great added benefit for those of us with IBS. Hope it works for your wife!

I also have high cholesterol, I am allergic to the statin drugs, so the doctor suggested that I try red yeast rice or fish oil to lower my cholesterol. Hope this helps.

I would imagine it is very helpful as any soluble fiber is proven to help and it is a soluble fiber... I'd have her start in small amounts to avoid GI upset and gradually increase just like someone with IBS would.. or with any other SF supplement.
