Take-out or store made hummus can have large amounts of tahini in it, which is high in fat. When I make hummus myself I only use 1-2 Tbsp max olive oil in it, so it's significantly lower in fat.
Could it be the fat content rather then the lemon??

Yep, you gotta watch the fat. I always make it myself. The lemon adds so much- don't take it out! Also the digestibility of it will change by what you have with it. On veggies it is too high in fat. On lots of bread/baguette it is better.

So the lemon is okay for most people, but not too much oil? I usually don't put any oil in when I make it myself - just 1-2 tbsp tahini for a can of chickpeas, some garlic and herbs (paprika; cumin sometimes; dill etc)
I usually eat it with bread or baked potato chips (Kettle or Utz)

Can I have a recipe for hummus please? I love the stuff. I used to buy the store made ones but am afraid to eat it now.

This is how I make it: as much garlic as you can handle (I use 2-3 large cloves) put into food processor first and chop up add 2 cans mostly drained garbanzo beans 2T tahini paste 1 lemon's juice (or a lime is fine too) about 1t or more kosher salt possibly 1t or more olive oil if you will be serving it on bread otherwise leave oil out process until smooth.
Additions: parsley (added with garlic to chop it) paprika good teaspoon or two cumin good teaspoon or two roasted red peppers hot pepper flakes
alot of time I add all the extra things on the list to my hummus, if I have roasted peppers, otherwise I just add cumin, paprika and hot pepper to it.
