OK - I don't know if this is right board or not, but I'm desperate today. I need some insight into these crazy and scarey symptoms. I ate junk - i.e. baked tostitos and chocolate on Saturday, but felt OK - other than light bloating.
Yesterday at noon, I decided to be really radical and had a salad w/ letuce, baby english peas, tomatoes (w/o seeds - diverticulosis), little shredded cheese, Boars Head turkey & honey mustard dressing + a baked potato (nothing on it) and a few saltines. I have been in hell ever since. Severe boating, chest/diaphragm pressure, anxiety/shaking, scared, BM yesterday, managed to sleep little last night - thought it had subsided, but awakened w/ same symptoms - 2 BMs this AM -shaking from head to toe - cramping, weakness in limbs, mouth extremely dry....plus, sinus symptoms - which makes me think food allergy/intollerance????
Does this sound like IBS or a food intollerance/reaction - could it be too much sodium from the turkey?????
It's so bad, I'm having to stay home from school. Sorry, guys, just need some reassurance. Don't want to go to GI, he'll just order another endosopy/colonoscopy - especially since I've had some blood due to "hems" - don't want to go to clinic - they'll think it's cardio, due to upper GI pressure - my regular dr. will say it's just my sensitive gut.
Blessings w/ Hugs & Thanks - Dorothy

If you are sure you don't have a GI bug then it could be IBS and diverticulosis acting up with good helping of anxiety thrown in to the mix. Before going to the doc you might try going back to a base safe diet for a few days and see if things settle down. However, if you find you have a fever you should consult with a doctor.

Good luck:)

Thanks, Syl!!! I guess I just need a "shoulder" today. I try to be so brave and strong, but this just knocked me for a loop and scared me. I wonder if the honey mustard could have had some MSG in it or if the turkey had too much sodium??? Whatever - I just want it to go.
Your reassurance helped much!

Good morning, Dorothy,

FWIW - I sometimes have a bad reaction from turkey, too. A plain turkey sandwich (no mustard or mayo) on rye bread can set me off. I usually buy the Boar's Head brand from my deli section in the supermarket but I also get the trots from a delicatessen-bought turkey sandwich.

One comment (that I really can't vouch for) - my GI guy swears that seeds and/or nuts do NOT have any effect on diverticulosis.

I'd suggest (similar to what Syl said) eating blandly for a day and don't take any anti-diarrheals (let whatever is upsetting your system come out).

I hope you feel better real soon.

Thanks so much, Saul!!!
I hate being such a baby, but this pressure in my abdomen/chest area from the bloating just scares the crap out of me - in general I feel like a "train wreck" - probably look like one too!
It helps so much for just someone to understand and say "You're OK"!!!

Hey, that stuff scares the crap out of me (literally), too.

As bad as the constant diarrhea is, I know what to expect from it. The feelings of chest-tightening, anxiety and heart racing are different. I don't handle those well. It's scary stuff.

Think positively, take deep breaths and TRY to relax (I know, I know... it's easier said than done). Just remember, you're not alone.

Have you ever heard of the "Special Carb Diet" and/or GAPS diet?

Eliminating complex carbs, including refined sugars, has been the BIGGEST key, for me and many others with IBD; IBS included, to reducing and/or NO symptoms.

I'm there with you on the emotional front. I get so overwhelmed dealing with this day in and day out. My naturopath has been a great help along with my therapist and supplements that I take.

I am sorry that you are feeling bad. Every time I eat Boors Head turkey I end up with stomach cramps and "D". I can eat other deli turkey without a problem. I have tried to eat it on several different occasions and always have the same reaction.

I understand you feeling scared about the pressure in your chest. About a month ago I was experiencing a heavy feeling in my chest and just didn't feel right. I was worried sick and thought I was having a heart attack. It ended up being an anxiety attack. The more I worried the worse I seem to feel. It was very scary.

I hope that you are feeling better.

Hugs

Thank you. I haven't heard of the GAPS diet, but I do know all about different diets basically calling for eliminiation of complex carbs and have been on and off it, which I'm trying to do again. One of the most effective for me has been Doug Kaufman's books... I was first diagnosed with CFS and Fibro. years ago and told to go on a modified version of that diet. Then, the "old" IBS (diarrhea all the time) started back, so things like bagels and applesauce seemed to help. But, originally, it was recommended: no grains on any type - including corn, wheat, flour...no yeast, nothing with vinegar, no fruits, except citrus, no sugar, no sweeteners - mainly protein, low GI veggies....
It's a tougher diet than any IBS diet. But, maybe I need to get serious and try it again. Thanks for the suggestion....

You're an angel to think of me! Thank you so much. I'm sure a lot of it is anxiety - I've been through a rough time for over a month now.
This is my last try at Boar's Head meat - I tried it because of the "no preservatives", etc.
I think I get maddest??? at myself for the fear, but it is, I think, a learned condition from 1) childhood and also I ended up in the ER one night and they thought I was having a heart attack. So, even though I know I'm well and actually experienced a miracle regarding my heart - I have to battle the fear when the symptoms come. If I could but control my mind! I'm working on it!
Thanks again, Janey!

Hi
If I had eaten a raw salad- with the cheese as you described _ I would have been big time sick- It also sounded like a possible tummy virus- if it kept up for a while I would see a Dr. - but I know I have suffered for a day or two when I have eaten something that isn't good for me- dairy, wheat- or raw salad(salad or anything raw is the worse)
Let us know how you are doing.

Thank you so much for caring enough to respond.
You're right about the cheese - I can't do fat at all and even though it wasn't much cheese, I'm sure it was high fat. My symptoms are similar to what my daughter went through with her gallbladder, but it's checked at least once a year and no stones. And, truthfully, my real name is "Chicken Little" and, don't care to proceed with further testing. I'll just keep on avoiding fat as much as possible.
I'm hoping most of it is out of my system, but the bloating is still there and am praying it's gone by morning as I need to be in school - FCAT Testing - which we all hate!!! - as much as the kids!
I have found the kindest, caring, compassionate people on here and you all bless my heart - Thank you! - Dorothy

Our minds can be our own worst enemy. I won't eat Boors Head anymore either. Just not worth feeling sick afterwards. Plus, it is more expensive than other brands.

That is what we are here for to help each other out and help each other through difficult times reasonable or unreasonable. Sometimes it helps to just be able to put your thoughts in writing and then to hear from others who understand is an extra bonus.

I hope that you are able to work through your fears and that you are feeling better.

Hi mariah,

I can't advise you on the diet but I would think you'd be better off sticking to the safer foods. It sounds to me that your issue MAY be stress related but staying with "safe" food certainly can't hurt. Whatever it is, I hope you get quick relief.

If you want to start your own topic (or "thread") you can simply click on the "Message Boards" button near the top of each page. That will bring you to the nine different forums. Click on the forum in which you want to post and then click on the "Post" button. A box will appear in which you can type in the title and your message.

Good luck.

1) Copy and repost this at the top of the IBS Diet message board so it will get "top billing" for all to see...
2) I would think stick to Heather's basic diet - go to the part of "what to eat when you can't eat anything else"....
What you describe sounds very typical of "IBSers" when we go through stress and anxiety..."this too shall pass"....
Even though my primary "D" has switched to primarily "C" - when I'm really anxious I get "D"....
