Hi,
I have a special needs daughter who has Rett syndrome who I believe deals with IBS-C. I have been following the diet on here for her and it is helpful. However she is dependent on digital stimulation and fleets enemas in order to have a BM. Often during the day she will abruptly start screaming in pain ( she is nonverbal) and once I give her an enema she is better even if it is just a little bit of gas that comes out. This can occur 3x/day. THe outbursts are very extreme and then after the enema she is like a new person. We've had extensive GI workups and have tried many things to help but really to no avail. I still wonder in the back of my mind could she be having intermittent sigmoid volvulus because she does have a redundant colon or some protoglia fugax. We just saw a doctor who mentioned possibly trying a small dose of valium (0.5mg) to see if would help in the possiblity she is having bowel spasms. She has been on prozac 12mg for past couple years (she is 20) Is valium at this dose something that could help with the pain of gas and bowel spasms or would it just make her sleepy which we don't want to do because we have tried xanax in the past and all it did even at a very low dose was make her fall asleep for an hour and she would wake up groggy but the cycle of the sudden outburst relieved with an enema would just start all over again. Any advice would be so helpful. We are desperate to find her relief. When she is not in pain she is so happy.
Thank you,
TeresaLouise

I'm so sorry she has been through so much!
I'm not an expert, but I don't think I've heard of Valium for spasms of any type. It's in the same category of drugs as Xanax and mainly used to stop anxiety/panic, help with relaxation...and would probably cause drowsiness like the Xanax.
I don't always do what I'm told because I've had so many weird drug reactions, but has your dr. ever recommended something like Miralax on a daily basis? And, I've heard Bentyl is good for spasms, but I think it's usually spasms related to diarrhea...
Maybe the dr. is trying to help her "gut"/colon relax???
Wish I had more information.
Blessings! Dorothy

Thank you so much for your feedback. Yes we have tried miralax with my daughter but it gave her alot of gas and intestinal pain and was not able to tolerate it. I am able to keep her stool soft with milk of magnesia at night and some ground flaxseed. Problem is more with slow motility. I also take doctors advice with caution because so many things haven't worked out and often have to go with my instinct to see if something feels right to us to try. I might give the valium a try but at an even lower dose than he recommended. Blessings to you to.
