So I'm Dustin, I'm 16 years old, and I've been lurking the helpforibs boards for a while now, but decided I'd join you all and see if I can't help others and possibly get help myself!

as for a background on myself, I'm not unfamiliar with IBS and what it has to bring. I've been IBS-A (streaks of C with bouts of D) with really bad gas since I was 5, and my mom also has it.

I started doing Heather's peppermint caplets and acacia fiber daily, along with hypnotherapy treatment in January, and have noticed that I have a lot more control and understanding over what I'm dealing with.

But, the sad twist on the story is that my gut is completely random, as far as food and symptoms go. I can be very strict on what I eat one day, making sure I take all of my peppermint doses, and take a half teaspoon of fiber in the morning and before I go to bed, and could have a horrible bout of diarrhea.

But then another day, I could miss a dose of peppermint and only take a half teaspoon of fiber all day and completely binge on foods that should double me over in pain such as hot cheetos, fast foods, greasy foods, and soda, and be perfectly fine and have normal BM's.

Sorry for typing a novel, but I just wish I could figure out what's going on and get a hold on it, because it has really held me back from a lot of things normal kids my age go and do.

Welcome Dustin. I believe you will find that the only way to get close to stable is to follow the Eating for IBS diet constantly. Your body can react either immediately to what you eat or several hours or even a day later. I realize at your age it is really tough to stick with the diet since you are bombarded with all the wrong food. I can't imagine what I would have done had I developed IBS in my high school years. Sometimes a meal consisted of a candy bar and a soft drink. Now that would send me running to the restroom in a matter of minutes or hours. My advice to you is to carefully read this website and all of Heather's advice. Follow it as closely as you can and remember that you will still have some bad days. Last two weeks I started having bouts of diarrhea that I couldn't explain along with horrible gas and cramps. Turns out my office started stocking new bottled water and it contained some minerals that are IBS unfriendly!! I stopped drinking the bottled water at the office and I am fine now. Keep us posted on your problems and your progress.
