I am still on the diet....religiously.... but still have many questions that perplex me.

1. How do you guys feel good about this diet?....processed foods, difficulty with vitamins, etc?
2. When you cook down vegetables aren't all of the nutrients they possess lost? I was told this by my doctor and nutritionist. Coupled with the vitamin issue how is this a long term solution?
2. How do you get enough calories to have an energetic lifestyle?
3. How do you know how much SF, SFS, Fat and IF to incorporate and when.
4. When you are stable do you feel well or just better? When I am on the diet I feel better but not well. Like I am hopping around on one leg still.

I have changed my entire lifestyle and am not satisfied with the results. I appreciate any advice for any of these questions.

1. yes! I would be on the diet, for the most part, without having IBS.
2. I don't eat my veggies mushy but I don't have major issues with IF. Carrots are more nutritious cooked though. I take a multivitamin too and eat Luna bars.
2? (there are two twos) I eat tons of calories, but my body prefers I don't.
3. Trial and error. Basically pushing the limits now and again has shown me I am ok with alot of IF but not okay with more fat.
4. I have been perfect for many months in the past but now I am bloated and gassy nearly everyday. However I rarely have c or d and only when I screw up. My d is very tolerable when it does happen and it is always my fault.

Hope this helps

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

I am not on the diet religiously.....and so far not that bad.
1. I feel good about this diet. It makes sense. I miss junk food. When i stray...I pay.
2.Don't cook your veggies til they're mush.Try steaming them. I don't think you lose the nutrients then. Cook your carrots with rice or your potatos. It gives flavor and i would think the nutrients are reabsorbed into the rice.
3. Trial and error. Eat more SF and add bits of SFS fat and IF at a time.
4.When I am stable, I'll let you know. I feel better when I'm not screwing up. It'll take a while to trust your body though. Even though I feel good, my mind is always wondering if I really do and then I don't feel so good. I have an overactive imagination so I can talk myself into feeling crappy.(doesn't work the other way though)

How long have you been working on this lifestyle? It took a long time for your body to lose it's patience and rebel against the crap we feed into it. It might take a while for the process to be reversed.
Good luck and never give up. The solution for everyone is differant but we're all in this together.

1. The diet is excellent and generally speakings it is consistent with the research findings about the role of diet in IBS.
2. A small amount of nutrients mostly vitamins are lost when vegetables are cooked. The nutrient value of proteins, fats and carbohydrates in veggies are not harmed by cooking. Some vitamin A, C, E, K and B are lost merely by cutting vegetables. Sometimes cooking can increase the amount of some nutrients in veggies. For example, the amount of antioxidants in carrots and lycopene in tomatoes increases when cooked. Cooking breaks plant cells open to increase the absorption of these antioxidants and other beneficial plant chemicals. Use as little water as needed to cook veggies and reserve the water for use in soups or preparing rice, pasta, etc because it contains the vitamins and minerals from the cooked veggies.
2. Up your EFI food intake to meet your caloric needs.
3. The USDA recommends a minimum daily fiber intake of 25-30 grams. Heather recommends a higher intake of fiber particulary SF. The USDA and Heather recommends 20-25% of daily calories should come from fat. The latest research suggests that all IBSers including IBS-C should dramatically reduce the intake of IF from grains and replace it with SF and IF from fruits and veggies. I don't take any SFS - I get all of my fiber from my diet. I limit my consumption of foods to those that have less than 10-15% fat by weight - this is simpler than calculating the daily percentage of calories from fat. I keep my SF consumption as high as possible and my IF consumption as low as possible.
4. Sometimes I feel well - sometimes I just feel better. Diet control is only a management tool not a cure.

Good luck
