Hi everybody,
A number of people I know have mentioned concern over my vitamin B12 intake since I became a vegetarian. I was reading some websites that mention nutritional yeast as a source of B12. Does anybody make use of it in recipes or as a supplement in order to get B12? Any positive or adverse reactions?
Thanks so much, Jen

I've been a vegetarian, now mostly vegan because of IBS, for years, and have always taken a B12 supplement. Its important for veggies to be sure they get this. I don't think I've ever had an episode I could link to my B12 intake. I take it on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, with my other vitamins and IBS supplements and can go for weeks without an episode! (of course then I try something I shouldn't and bam!) I use nutritional yeast in cooking, but have never taken it straight up.

Thanks so much for your reply! It's incredibly heartening to hear that the supplement doesn't cause you any difficulty. My main symptom lately is pain, so I've been a little scared to take any sort of vitamin. But I will give the pills a try and also start using the yeast in recipes...
Be well! Jen

I suggest you get vegetarian organic vitamins and B12 (from an organic/health food store). The standard brands get their content from animal products and diary products, which could cause problems, not to mention being something you don't want to eat. Also- a heating pad works well for pain. Its always nice to meet another veggie!

We use nutritional yeast without any problems. It's great as a cheese substitute. I like to mix it up with avocado and make a "grilled cheese". YUMMMM It's also great for baked tofu as a coating.

Hey, I checked out the B12 at my local HFS - it contains sorbitol. Does your brand? Thanks...

There is a vegan cookbook called The Uncheese Cookbook by Joanne Stepaniak that uses alot of nutritional yeast. It has alot of recipes for "cheese", dressings, pizzas, quiches, sweets, ect.....check it out. Most of it is quite low in fat also.

If yeast bothers you, will nutritional yeast also cause a problem? I noticed it's deactivated.
