Possible reaction to Chinese herbs

Hi,

I started seeing an acupuncturist for IBS this past Monday, 5/5. He also gave me Chinese herbs to take that came in capsules in a bottle. I had one capsule twice per day Tuesday and was fine.

Wednesday I had two twice per day plus another two Thursday morning and noticed a burning sensation around my urethra. I called the acupuncturist and he said I would still get good results without the herbs.

I am feeling a lot better now. I could taste those herbs in my mouth well after lunch. I drank a lot of water to flush them out. The acupuncturist did not think the problem was the herbs.

I was worried because tests in October 2006 show I have microscopic blood in my urine. My doctor did not think I have cancer so no cytoscope was done.

Anybody else have a similar experience?

Yes, I too went to an acupuncturist and was given Chinese herbs (small round black pills). I have had chronic UTIs (urinary tract infections) most of my life and I also have microscopic blood in urine. I have all the tests numerous times and no cancer. The herbs made my urethra burn and I was very uncomfortable so I quit taking them. The treatments made my IBS worse and even though the Chinese Doctor (in my case Korean) told me it would help if I would stick it out, I opted not to. I even had attacks in the office with the needles sticking in me. Good luck to you on this one.

Hi Barbara50,

I had my second acupuncture treatment today. My acupuncturist said I could skip the chinese herbs and just get the needles. He said the treatment is more effective with the herbs but it's OK if I can't tolerate them. My specialist has a 95% success rate with IBS. He said in a couple of months I can slowly add back the trigger foods to my diet. Oh boy, ice cream, mac and cheese and wine, here I come!!!!

I finally had a BM today without a laxative. I really think the acupuncture is helping me. It's better than mainstream doctors telling you to buy Citrucel or Metamucil.

Thanks for your comments!

I would definetley keep with the acupuncture becuase it has helped me and alot of others I know very much. Just as long as the acupuncturist is experienced, and as long as you are completely truthful and clear on the intake which is very important. The goal with CHinese medicine is to regain a balance in the body. IF your body is completely out of balance, which yours probably is, then you may not have positive reaults for a while. The body will try to correct itself which can sometimes be uncomfortable at first. ALso, certain points do specific things and open up speciifc channels, so if you were misdiagnosed by the acupuncturist, you may not get great results either. Even the position they place the needle in to the skin whether it be slightly up or down can change the results, so a good acupuncturist is really important.
