can I start eating with vegetables?

So I'm still pretty new to eating this way and I have a question that I've been wondering about. I know it's a good idea to start a meal with soluble fiber and hopefully have some insoluble fiber mixed in. On the "cheat-sheet" that Heather has it lists things like carrots, yams and sweet potatoes as soluble fiber, right along with the oatmeal, rice, and other things, mostly grains. Does this mean that, just as much as I could have the main part of my meal be rice or bread, I could have the main or the first part of my meal be carrots or yams, probably cooked or stewed? I love vegetables and this would be so exciting if that was a good idea!

On the IBS Diet Cheat Sheet there are three columns. The first is safe food with mostly soluble fiber. That includes rice, pasta, oatmeal, barlet, etc. It also includes carrots, yams, potatoes, sweet potatoes, rutabagas, parsnips, beets, squash, pumpkin, mushrooms, chestnuts, etc. The next column contains a list of food with insoluble fiber like whole grains, citrus fruits, corn, peas, green beans, etc. When I first stablized I stuck mostly to soluble fiber foods supplemented with acacia twice daily. After being stable for about 3 weeks I started adding cooked vegetables one at a time. Interestingly I found that green beans work well for me while brocoli and peas give me awful gas and eventually D. Squash is OK if it is steamed or boiled--not fried and if grilled no oil unless its safe. You need to get a copy of "Eating for IBS" and read it cover to cover. We are all different. I can eat raw turnips and they don't bother me but if I eat raw celery I better stay at home for the next 12 hours. I think the only way to go is to follow the general guidelines but also don't add but one new food each day so that you will know what works for you. Good luck to you and don't give up. I've been at this now for six months and while my diet would be considered boring by some at least I am now eating and actually enjoying both my food and life again.
