Is lactic acid a derivative of lactose? I've been avoiding lactose as far as possible but the last 2 days i've eaten something with lactic acid in it and have felt really bloated and uncomfortable. So was thinking i've consumed lactose without realising. Also is dextrose related to wheat or lactose or neither? Thanks xxx

Although lactic acid can be derived from lactose commercially it is usually derived from the fermentation of nondairy sources such as cornstarch, potatoes and molasses. It is used in foods to adjust the acidity and as an antioxidant. Lactic acid is lactose free and it is not a problem for lactose intolerant individuals.

Dextrose is the common name for the simple sugar glucose.
