the wheat bran ones aren't even new - and there are numerous ones. Dr. P. J. Whorwell, one of the top IBS docs/researchers in the UK, has conducted several of them. I met him at a conference a few years ago, and he was such a sweetheart, and visibly frustrated that he still saw so many patients who'd been told to eat bran. I felt for him.

Syl -- If you check out the IBS Research Library, under Diet (near the bottom of the list), you'll find several articles discussing bran (IF) and how it's irritating to the bowel. HTH.

I saw Dr. Whorwell in the early 1990s when I lived in the UK. I have a number of papers that talk about IF and IBS-D and I have read the ones concerning wheat bran. However, I have not come across a paper that discusses general negative effects of all IF on IBS-C. Do you know which one in the library addresses this specifically?

Thats interesting to learn seeing as how my aunt and a few other friends of the family who have IBS manage it very well with the "ignorant" advice given to them by their doctors.

It is not surprizing to hear that your relatives and friends manage okay with the traditional advice. Even Matthew and Whorwell in their editorial about the effect of bran on hospitalized IBS patients made guarded comments in their conclusions which read:

In conclusion, it is probably best to recommend that patients with IBS be left to judge for themselves whether bran helps or exacerbates their symptoms, but there is enough evidence to suggest that the current dogma of routinely treating all IBS sufferers with bran should be challenged. Proprietary sources of fiber, such as ispaghula, may be more appropriate for those IBS subjects (for example, constipated) for whom fiber supplementation is believed justified.

My mother was IBS-C. Bran and raw veggies were central in the management of her symptoms. On the other hand I cannot tolerate much IF. However, it would be nice if more IBS professionals and observers would discuss the role and scope of all dietary fiber types in an IBS management diet.

Check this one Time for reappraisal . It simply says "all symptoms". I don't know that I've seen fiber studies that break out the participants into D, C, A, etc. There's an awful lot of work that needs to be done here.

That paper was referred to in 1998 editorial. For some time I have been searching for information about the relationship between IBS-C and the various types of fiber. There may be a clue in that research about which carbohydrates are fermented by methane producing bacteria which can impact IBS-C. Oh well I am sure this information will eventually appear. Thanks

Last time I "tried" oatmeal (which was the best advice I could get at the time!) I ended up in the hospital and I was sure that I was going to explode... I love this site. Thank you Heather for outreaching to the magazine on our behalf.

Thanks Heather for writing the editor. I am so tired of hearing the wrong advice. I had a doctor, a GI specialist, recently tell me that more fruits and vegies would help my stomach. I have pretty much given up on doctors for IBS. I thank you Heather for starting this website and writing your books. YOu are the ray of light many people need.
