In February I posted that the bran based cereal that I had been using for years to keep me regular was no longer working. And in fact was causing violent episodes of diarrhea, with painful spasms. After following the emergency diet here for about a week along with alot of peppermint tea and Immodium, the violent episodes quieted down. Because of my fear of it returning, I have remained on a very limited menu and only yesterday tried 1/2 boiled skinless chicken breast with no problem to the few items. Also I started on the acacia powder 3 days ago..1/2 tsp. twice a day. I am having bm's that are not diarrhea but not solid either, soft leaving me feeling like I am not done. This happens twice a day. I would like to try IF and want to know what is the safest one to start out with? I need to have a more solid stool and this will not happen w/o IF. I am taking Gas-X to cope with the gas and bloating and it does help. Any suggestions would be appreciated..thanks...

Hi, When I posted someone thought it was d/ibs. During the weeks of spasms, the schedule was, I would go a fairly normal stool say in the afternoon. THen a few minutes later, I would get cramps and run to the bathroom with a looser stool and back again looser but less stool until there was nothing. Then several hours later, severe spasms that left me doubled up and on Levsin for at least another 24 hours. Finally as it eased up I would not have another bm for a blessed 2 days or sometimes 3. Then the whole thing would start again. That's when I came here and posted in February. My day consists of glass of water w/1/2 tsp. acacia flour. Later on I have rice cereal with boiled water. I am lactose intolerant. Then either baked or boiled skinless potatoes, rice, dry french bread toasted and also noodles. I am always hungry. Plenty of tea and water. Yestday and today I had boiled skinless chicken breasts. The other day I went temporarily crazy and had 2 jellybeans(red ones:) but I need to have a more solid stool. What do you suggest I try in IF? Thanks...

I started as a d and had that exact pattern of bms that your describing...awful . Keep slowly increasing your acacia and you will see that your bowels with have more bulk. Have you tried oatmeal? That has some IF too but I do very well with it. Some people don't though so just try a bit. Lots of d'ers report that it's a great morning staple to stabalize their bellies. How about a banana smoothie with just a bit of an IF fruit like strawberries or blueberries in the blender? And REALLY pureed veggies...just try one and see how it goes for a couple of days. The acacia has stopped the spasms and pain, right? I know it's frustrating, but if so, then you're on your way.

Hi and thanks for the quick reply... I will increase the acacia in two days so that I have 5 days of the begininng dose. Oatmeal always gave me alot of gas, even as a kid:) I am wondering with the smoothie(will have to check the receipes here) if they can be made w/o dairy. Has anyone ever tried baby vegetables and fruits either strained or the next step? I would think they would be easier on the system. The acacia though has been wonderful, that and the peppermint tea for easing the bloating and spasms. I am wondering if the day will ever come when I can stand to zip up a pair of pants over my tummy. Thanks, Virag:)

A simple smoothie can consist of just the fruits and some milk alternative or even water to thin it out. You can add a touch of honey if you'd like. I use bananas and frozen blueberries with just about an ounce of almond milk.
