Hello,
I am searching out a list of high fructose fruits - from what I see pears, peaches, plums, apples are high fructose while banana, avacado, berries, pineapple, oranges are not. I was looking to see where kiwi fell in there. BAsically pineapple,(irritate mouth) oranges (irritate mouth) and banana (gas) bother me so I am not left with much. Thanks, Debbie IBS-C

There is a resonable overview of fructose malabsorption on this web page and here is a link to the reference article give below.
The symptoms are bloating, gas and D or C. It is estimated a significant percentage of IBS suffers also suffer from fructose malasborption.

White and brown sugars (sucrose) and glucose are not a problem. In fact generally speaking foods that have equal amounts of fructose and glucose such as white sugar (sucrose) are not a problem either. The problem occurs with foods in which there is more fructose than glucose.

Hello, I thought I posted this question but do not see it. I wondered i fyou could tell me/us what you eat as far as a daily menu. When you have your fruit and how - cooked, pureed, which ones you have always and which you have now and then? Any vegtables you avoid? How does squash, pumpkin, and sweet potatoe fit with the avoidance of High fructose? Do they fall in the category of avoidance or no? What about molasses? Brown rice syrup? Thank you very very much. My daily menu is really quite simple.
Breakfast Oatmeal, brown sugar, no milk and 1/2 kiwi or unripe banana sliced on the oatmeal
Lunch Chicken, shrimp, scallops, carrots, peeled zucchini and rice. I will make either a stir fry or a light curry. I use about 1 tps olive oil.
Dinner Chicken, pork tenderloin, bison or fish. Rice, potatoes or pasta Veggies: carrots, parsnip, peas, green beans, sweet potato, and some types of squash
Snacks Zucchini loaf with a small portion of kiwi, banana, peach or apricot (no skin), pretzels or small portion of Staceys Pita Pockets. In the summer I some times have strawberries or raspberries from the garden with my loaf.
I rarely eat pumpkin. Too much IF. I also have to be very careful of the type of squash I eat. For example spaghetti squash has far too much IF for me. On the other hand acorn squash is okay.
I use molasses, white and brown sugar. I have never used brown rice syrup only because I have never seen it.
I do not eat raw veggies at all but I really miss salads

Hello,
So you eat peaches (I thought peaches and apricots were hight fructose) and sweet potatoes. What about tomatoes in regards to fructose. Do you always make sure that your banana is unripe. Why no milk on your oatmeal? Do you use rice or soy milk? Thank you. Debbie IBS-C

P.S. Are apples, pears, raisin, dates, figs the most fruit that you avoid. What about pineapple - it appears to be low fructose on the chart. So you eat banana, peaches, nectarines(?), kiwi, blueberry, strawb, rasp., avacado? Avoid pumpkin because of IF not because of high fructose. You eat all veggies except spaghetti squash. Thanks.

Our menus are very similar, lots of rice, safe veggies always cooked, chicken, fish, shrimp etc.. On a daily basis I also eat mushrooms (with lunch and supper dishes), applesauce (snack) and berries (in my oatmeal instead of your kiwi/banana), and I tend to bake muffins or cookies to snack on.
(Note: I don't eat any pork, and haven't tried bison yet)

I avoid everything on the avoid list.
I do not eat fruits such as pineapple, citrus fruits (I use the juice for cooking), rhubarb and plums. I avoid these because they have too much IF content for me.
I only eat fruit when it is accompanied by a good base of SF. Most of my meals contain about 90% SF and 10% IF.

Is that tomatoe paste as the IF in tomatoes is too harsh for you? Are tomaotes considred high fructose? Also, I am confused on peaches - the site you listed said that peaches are okay but another site I went to listed them as high fructose with sorbitol which can aggravate. Thanks-Debbie

Not sure what it is about tomatoes that gives me problems. It could be the acid. However, I don't have problems when I used pure tomatoe paste in small amounts in sauces. For example, I make a very thick spaghetti sauce using about 3 tablespoons Hunts tomatoe paste with red wine, lemon juice, herbs & spices, salt and a bit of sugar.
Peaches are one of the fruits you will have to experiment with. I suspect some varieties are safer than others. The USDA database says a peach contains a little less fructose than glucose. It should be safe. However, I am sure that some varieties of sweeter peaches will contain more fructose than glucose and present a problem for some people.

Thanks - re: tomatoe Peaches - from what I read it is the sorbitol in the peaches and that can cause problems when wanting to eat low fructose fruits. Oh yes, which milk sub do you drink? Thanks again for all the info that you have shared Syl. Debbie IBS-

In some baking I use smaller portions than specified in the recipe of milk or yogurt. When I eat foods containing small amounts of dairy I take a lactase enzyme.
Regarding the sorbitol I think you will have to experiment and see if you can handle peaches.

Hello Syl,
Beano has mannitol in it and I wanted to use it when I ate chickpeas or kidney beans. Have you ever read where mannitol is similar to sorbitol or fuctose. I know I have been reading that sorbitol is harmful to some people who have fructose intolerance just like fructose. Anyway, just wondered if you have encountered BEano and mannitol and what the findings are? Thank again for help. Debbie IBS

Generally speaking I avoid sorbitol and mannitol. They are both difficult sugars to digest. However, one beano tablet weighs about 1/3 gram. Mannitol is the second last ingredient on the list of ingredients. There is very little mannitol in beano. Similarly, there is sorbitol in Gas-X. One of these pills weighs less than a beano tablet. Again there is not enough sorbitol in a Gas-X pill to worry about.

It looks interesting, however, it repeats most of the information about fructose and sorbitol that can be found in the other articles and web sites that I have posted before. I am fairly sure that peaches are one of the fruits you will have to try and see if it is a problem for you.
