Hi Guys, I've had IBS-D (officially) for a year now. Unofficially for several years. And I have until recently been able to eat chicken subs like the sweet onion chicken Teriyaki sub at SUBWAY with little problem. The last 5 subs I have had has completely knocked me flat within 10 hrs of eating one. One of the last times was while I was traveling to California on business. The flight back to Toronto was not fun. I must have had 30 or 40 chicken subs previously this year with little to no problems. Lately even with peppermint caps and acacia powder it still triggers IBS-D.
I thought it could be all the lettuce but I have absolutely no issues with Vietnamese dishes that contain a lot of raw veggies (along with plenty of rice noodles) BTW, Vietnamese is awesome for our IBS diets.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Have you added anything different to your subs lately?

Not at all, but when I get brave enough I will order another and go super light on the veggies. Apparently the sweet onion sauce has no fat. Thanks for your replies.

Hmm. Not knowing how you take your sandwiches, my first thoughts are as follows:
1. Maybe they changed the ingredients in the sweet onion sauce to include dairy... dairy is a major IBS trigger and should be avoided.
2. You don't put cheese on your sandwich, do you? Cheese = bad.
3. Maybe the chicken is cooked in such a way that it's too greasy for your system right now.
4. Maybe the raw veggies are too much for your system right now.
It's possible that this is just a quirk of your system, and once you're stable again, you'll be able to handle the sandwich again with no problems. But I'd suspect that they changed something in the ingredients of the sandwich components, honestly. They do that sometimes, and don't necessarily make it known.

I think you might be right. I eat homemade chicken "subs" almost everyday.
No, no cheese, or that plastic stuff they call cheese. Veggies include lettuce, tomato, green pepper, onion, and pickles. I know all of them are high in IF, but in the past the bread's SF usually outweighed the IF.

Yeah, it sounds like they might have changed something, then. I suspected that right away because someone else on here used to get tuna subs at Subway, for the longest time, because they made it with low-fat mayo - it was safe. Then one day they just changed it. Regular mayo, no warning at all. Irritating!

Maybe it wasn't what was in the food that upset your stomach...could you have picked up a tummy bug?

Oops - if you've eaten five subs resulting in stomach problems over a period of time then its possibly not a tummy bug....sorry
