Well everyone, it has been almost 2 years since I registered. I went for my follow up appointment today from my colonoscopy and endoscopy and have been diagnosed with microscopic colitis. I posted on the chrohn's/colitis board too but I am feeling really lost right now. I don't know where to start besides knowing that I will continue to follow the EFI diet anyway. My blood tests all came back normal as well. Not alot of info out there on microscopic colitis???

I don't know a thing about microscopic colitis - I just wanted to say I'm sorry you've got this to worry over. (Stress is so hard on IBS tummies!) I hope someone here or on the Colitis Board can help.

Take care.

I hope someone on the Crohn's board can help, but unfortunately that board is very low-traffic.

If you do a search with no time limits, I remember there was a guy (named Steve maybe?) who had microscopic colitis. I don't know how much info his posts contained, if any, but if he had it maybe others did and that could be of some help.

Were you prescribed anything for this? I believe MC is a form of IBD so did the GI want you taking anything like Asacol to help with the inflammation?

Sorry you have to deal with this! I don't know how stable you are, but if you're still having problems, maybe once you do find out more about MC you'll be able to treat it.

Hello...I am a fellow microscopic colitis sufferer!! My doc says I apparently have both...IBS and the MC. I don't know what to make of things though...I was thrilled to get the diagnosis believe it or not b/c I felt like it was a more "legit" reason for the way I was feeling and a bit easier to explain to family/friends ("an inflammation of my large intestine"). It also seems though that microscopic colitis is not nearly as severe as full blown ulcerative colitis. I bought the book "What to expect the first year: Chrohn's & Colitis" or something like that...similar to Heather's IBS book but I realized (thank goodness) that my symtoms seemed to be on the more mild side. That's relatively speaking of course...I feel terrible for those who have it full blown...they have to have bowel replacements and all kinds of tough things. I hope you don't have it that bad. What prompted you to have another colonoscopy? Just a check-up? In my case, I was diagnosed about 7 years ago with IBS (but had it long before then) and I went to a new GI last fall for a repeat colonoscopy b/c it was getting worse. He also did an endoscopy and found that my stomach is inflamed too and that I have gastritis...lovely (I'm only 35 years old!) I am on Asacol (400 mg) 2 tablets twice a day usually (that's the maintanance dosage) or three time a day. I just posted something about this...I haven't checked my responses yet on this board, but I was saying that I'd like to wean from the Asacol if possible if I can get stable from Heather's diet and the Acacia (I'm only a month into this). I'm going to my GI next week so I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not. I read that Asacol can have bad side effects on your liver and/or kidneys. I also take Librax (Clinidium) which has two medicines in it...one to slow down the bowels I think, and one for anxiety. I think that works way better than the Asacol..but I don't know...as you already know, you never can tell what the heck is working/not working/triggers, etc. with these stupid (excuse me) digestive problems! At one point, my GI told me to take PeptoBismol every day as a preventative. But honestly, nothing has been as good at being preventative as Heather's diet and the SF theory for me (so far). Once I get a flare up, there is no stopping it (IBS-D) except Immodium hours later. Maybe I'd be having more flare ups without the Asacol??? I don't know. Well, hope it helps to know you're not the only one on this site with MC. I tried to post at the other board too but not too much luck. I'll fill you in on what my doc says next week regarding the whole thing.

A Google search on "microscopic colitis" yields a fair amount of information. Here are some URLs to get you started

http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/collagenouscolitis/index.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microscopic_colitis
http://cms.clevelandclinic.org/digestivedisease/body.cfm?id=93
http://www.mayoclinicproceedings.com/inside.asp?AID=332&UID=

The major dietary changes are reducing the amount of fat in the diet, eliminating foods that contain caffeine and lactose, and avoiding over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or aspirin.

It looks like the EFI diet will suit you just fine. Good luck

Thanks so much for your reply, Please keep me filled in on what you find out. I am thinking that I must have IBS-A and MC if that is possible. The symptoms for MC say watery D and yes I have that but I also get very C. The reason for my colonscopy and endoscopy was that I had never had either done!!!! I have gone through the health system for 10+ years with these problems and finally someone decided they better do more than just "take a peek in there" and see what was going on. My endoscopy showed severe inflammation and bleeding in my esophagus. The colonoscopy didn't show much until the specialist looked at the biopsies he took from different areas. Right now I am on Pariet to get my reflux/ GERD/ acid under control. The specialist thinks that after 6 months of treating acid I should see a dramatic increase in my symptoms overall. Right now it is rough because taking away all the acid that has been in my stomach and breaking down my food, makes digestion a little harder. His main recommendation for treatment was Pepto Bismol like you said as well and I have read on various MC sites. If I am still having problems after a few months I am to go back to my doctor or call the specialist. I also take an antispasmodic called Buscopan.
It definitely is a relief, although I am sorry you suffer as well, to hear that someone else here has MC. Please take care and keep in touch

Thank you Syl for the links, I think I have already been to a couple of them but the one is good and I hadn't seen it yet.
I agree, that the EFI diet should work okay for me. Why change a good thing??
Have a good weekend,

Thanks for your reply. Oddly enough the treatment that was recommended by the specialist was Pepto Bismol. That is the main thing suggested on all the sites I have read so far. Guess sometimes the simplest things can work.
I also take an antispasmodic called Buscopan and a reflux med called Pariet.
The Pariet is supposed to help with the inflammation as well because it will reduce the amount of acid passing through.
For now, I am supposed to keep on with what I am doing and see how getting my GERD under controls effects everything else.
I am not stable but I would say that I am dramatically better than I have been in previous years.
Thanks for your concern and take care of yourself,
Bethany

thanks for your reply Sand. I didn't find much on the boards from my search so I kinda assumed that there weren't many others here with Microscopic Colitis. I am going to stick around anyway because I believe I also have IBS-A, the MC diagnosis doesn't explain the bad C I get on rotation with D.
Have a good weekend,
