My doctor wants to put me on an antispamodic but, I am trying to lose weight. If antispamodic's slow down the digestive system, doesn't that, in turn, slow down your metabolism? Also, wouldn't Fennel tea have some of the same benefits?

I used to take antispasmodics, and I've never noticed a difference between them and weight gain. I think it's pretty difficult to GAIN weight on the EFI diet!

Thank you. I noticed you said 'used to', does that mean you have learned how to manage the IBS without them? I thought about trying the Fennel tea and Acacia before I consider the medication.

Are you IBS-D or IBS-C? What are your primary symptoms?

Is it possible to have both? It seems I go from one extreme to the other? If I had to pick one I would say IBS-C. With IBS-D thrown in occassionally for pizazz. haha

Yep that's IBS-A. I had taken anti-spasmodics a while ago, before I knew about Heather's diet. I don't find they helped at all on their own. I would start Heather's diet first and if you are doing well with that, then stick with it. If you still have problems, then would be a better time to try anti-spasmodics, while still following the diet properly.
It definetly helps to find a balance of SF and IF, especially for someone who gets C. Fennel, ginger and peppermint tea can all help alleviate symptoms so give those a try.

Thank you! I'm new to this site but, have found it full of information! A real life saver. I'm curious about the whole "Heather's Diet" everyone is talking about. Does it just consist of Fennel tea, peppermint capsules, and learning about SF's and IF's and how to eat properly? Or is there something more specific that I may be missing?

It is a specific diet.

Hey Kimba, I take antispasmodics when needed ( note they calmed my tummy down but did not totally alleviate the pain). When I was first diagnosed I took them every day for about three weeks and tried the diet. Then after I started to notice that my stomach was not hurting as much so I cut back on the meds since I did not like the side effects, dry mouth, they gave me. I still have my prescription and when I have a bad flare up I will take the meds. I just felt that I was on a lot of pills and I was having to choose. I have severe allergies and could not take my allergy pills when taking the antispasmodics. My doctor has also put me on 10mg of Lexapro to help with the stress and anxiety this stuf give me.
