I was diagnosed with IBS 18mnths ago, shortly after I came across this website and have been following Heather's diet ever since. The suggestions (particularly the EFI guidelines, herbal teas and peppermint caps) have helped heaps and although I would not call myself stable yet my symptoms are much reduced. The message boards have been an invaluable source of info for me - thanks to all of you for sharing your knowledge and experiences!

The problem is that I've been on the diet for over a year now and I'm still eating very little IF. I know this isn't healthy but I'm really scared of introducing new foods cause every time I do I seem to get sick (and my attacks last for several days). By the way I'm in a new job and want to avoid taking time off due to IBS - I have succeeded for the last 5 months but am scared that if I start introducing foods this will change. In case you're wondering I do try them in small quanties and either cook them well or puree them. I guess my body just needs time to get used to the food again before I can eat it without any symptoms?
Has any one else had this problem?

Part of my problem also is that I go through phases of being super excited about introducing stuff, which means I introduce several things at the same time and then don't know which ones made me sick! Combine that with attacks brought on by stress, hormones or overeating and its even harder to figure out what triggered the attack. How do you guys work it out?

I can cope with not eating dairy, red meat, caffeine etc but for health reasons (and cause I like them) I want to be eating a much wider variety of fruit and veg.

Any suggestions on how or what to introduce would be much appreciated

Btw I'm A with main symptoms being gas and bloating

thanks in advance

Getting more IF is tricky and takes time. It took me a long time to get up to the amount I eat now, so be patient! Also I find the longer I was stable the easier it was to recover from an attack. Because I am now eating more foods, I found I was getting more gas. I tried Beano and it worked amazingly not only for soy products but pretty much all veggies.

I would say try the Beano in case increasing IF in your diet is causing more gas which could cause more gas. And also be patient and try to increase little by little. If you are taking an SFS, try increasing that as well. I found that after stabilizing at a lower dose of SFS, I had to up my dose to be able to eat more IF safely.
