I don't know if there is anyone that can help me but I am getting ready to have back surgery in a few months. I follow the IBS diet as closely as I am able and can but still deal with chronic constipation. I am concerned about my diet while I am in the hospital and how I can deal with the constipation. Thank you. This is the first time I have posted on this messageboard. Lola

Are you eating enough IF and taking a SFS?

yes, I take a SFS all day as directed in the book, before meals and if I haven't eaten for awhile. I take Milk of Mag. every night to relieve my symptoms in the morning.

Do you eat enough insoluble fibre? (IF)

I probably eat the most IF in the evening because I am afraid of getting gas and bloating while I am at work. When I do eat IF in the evening I will get gas and some bloating.

I would tell your doctor you are concerned about your diet while staying in the hospital. Last time I had to stay at the hospital I spoke with the dietian there. They were very helpful. Good luck with your surgery.

You're probably not getting enough IF in your diet which could be causing the C, and it should be eaten throughout the day along with your SF (soluble fibre). Vegetables should be well cooked, mashed, or purred so you can digest it better. Also a lot of fruits should be peeled before eating. Some people on here use Beano when they eat IF because it helps reduce the bloating and gas. Fennel tea helps too.

Oh yes, sorry I got off topic, you were more concerned about the hospital stay.

Thank you. I will try doing that more during the day. I guess I have had some really bad bouts with my IBS that I am leary of doing anything other than what I already know really works and d/n upset my stomach. Esp. while I am work.

If you have Constipation, but also pain, is it better to peel the fruits and/or veggies to prevent pain...or better to eat the peel for the IF? My body isn't responding too well to either way.

I had back surgery (diskectomy) a few years ago, so I know what you mean!! I wasn't strictly following the IBS diet at the time. The anesthesia made me VERY sick and couldn't keep food down for at least a day. But do remember that the anesthesia is going to make you C pretty much no matter what you do. Mine lasted a few days, I remember. Just be patient, and keep taking the MoM! And also do as much walking post-op as you can. A few hours after my surgery they had me walking up and down the hallway outside my room!
Good luck - if you haven't had the surgery yet!

The peel on the fruit would help us go, but also cause more pain, right? What do you experts recommend in this situation? Do I peel my peaches, plums, nectarines, potatoes...or not? I'm not sure how either way effects me as I always have symptoms. But is one way generally the less of the 2 evils?
Thanks

I generally avoid the whole issue by having a smoothie every morning with bananas, pluots, peaches, berries, etc. I have tried eating peaches and pluots w/o peeling them, and regretted it later! The blending DEFINITELY helps.

Do you peel the peaches before you make the smoothie? What type of berries do you use? Do blueberry skins bother you? Bananas don't agree with me at all....constipation, gas, and major bloat. Too bad, I love them!
Is this the only fruit you eat all day? I find it hard to have one in the morning before work. I barely make it on time now.

I don't peel anything before putting it in the blender. That way I get all the benefits of the IF without the discomfort later! I use strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, though not all at the same time!! I base my smoothie on a banana, and typically only add one or two other fruits (perhaps a peach and 2-3 strawberries). If bananas bother you, you could try mangoes. I think those are about the two safest fruits.
Make your smoothie in the morning, but put it in a travel mug and take it with you!
Sometimes this is all the fruit I'll eat during the day; sometimes I'll have an apple in the afternoon. But the smoothie alone is 2-3 servings of fruit, which is pretty good (I think).

Jordy,
As you know, I'm IBS-C/pain and I eat my fruits with everything. The fruits I eat the most are: grapes, papaya, pineapple, mango, strawberries and a couple of prunes a day.

Most of these food don't have peels. Do you ever eat something like a peach or a nectarine or plum or apple that has skin to peel? Would you peel those?
When you say you eat your fruits with "everything" does that mean with all the peel or with all your meals?
Do the prunes give you gas? Dried prunes scare the heck out of me. do they help you go?
I'm really confuse about this peeling deal with the C and the pain.

I remember a doctor once telling me to eat dried prunes every day. They gave me HORRIBLE gas. If you're just starting out, and aren't yet stable (like me), I would blend or puree your fruits WITH the peel. It's a much safer way of getting IF.
It's also a trial and error thing. I did this with peaches last week. One morning I ate a peach regularly, skin and all. By the afternoon I had pain and gas. The next day I ate the same breakfast, but peeled the peach. Same results, though not quite as bad. The next day I blended the peach (skin included) into a smoothie, and felt fine that afternoon. So, you may want to try something like that to see if the skin bothers you.
