hi Heather i am an eighteen year old girl from england. Ive had IBS since I was fourteen it was brought on by a bout of gastroentroitous (i know i haven't spelt that right, sorry!)But ever since then Ive had IBS and been a recluse for about three years, slowly I started to research my condition and found what worked for me and what made me worse. It was very hard, i lost my friends as i couldn't go out and party with them and could never fully explain why, my boyfriend has had a hard time trying to be with me because i was so embarassed by my illness i just shut him out! At my worst I stopped eating completely and went down to six stone, my doctors just told me to eat or i'd die! So I did a process of elimination and found i could eat rice cakes rice and corn cereals and chicken soup, carrot soup etc. I now exsist on snack a jacks (rice cakes) soups and cereals a small amount of bran bars and the odd roast dinner, but strangley I have the ability to vomit up what ever I eat without having to force it up, I was wondering if you had ever encountered any one else with this ability. It doesn't hurt and I dont feel sick or ill, it just comes up when I have water after i eat. My doctor thinks its a reflux, and tried to give me pills to stop it, but i didn't take them as my knowing i could throw up anything i ate if i felt it would give me a bad stomach actually helped me start eating again as a kind of saftey net. I dont always throw up after food just big meals which i avoid if possible. Any way I now take colofax tablets and they stop my spasms, i suffer mostly from constipation and then terrible pain when it all builds up and finally comes out! Not very pleseant! I was wondering if you think your acacia tummy fibre will help me. sorry to go on so long but its good to get it out to some one who knows where i'm coming from. Your web site is soooooo brilliant i can't express what it means to me to be able to read about others struggles with ibs and feel not so alone thank you!xx

I thought I'd say hi. Welcome to the boards!

Vomiting in any way - spontaneous or otherwise - is not typically considered an IBS symptom. IBS is a lower-digestive-tract issue, whereas that would be an upper-tract concern. As far as *what* actually causes that, I'm not sure, but believe it or not, my boyfriend and I were just talking about this the other day - no lie - because the same thing happens to his father! For him, it's not large meals or a glass of water afterwards, he can just bend over and up it comes. His doctors have no idea why he can do that, either, which is why I have no helpful suggestions for you, but I just wanted to say that I HAVE encountered someone with the same problem!

As for the constipation issue, the Acacia and the diet detailed here on the site, combined, will help. It's a lot of reading, but I totally recommend it - this site (not just the message boards) has been a complete lifesaver for me and so many others, and I think it can help you too.

Welcome again!

Have you heard about the IBS self-hypnosis tapes? They may help you tackle this problem on the mind-body connection level. Some people get fairly quick results with the tapes; it took me three times listening to them to have success. I'm IBS-D. I still get episodes (having one now), but I'm much better than I was. I think between the tapes and following Heather's diet, it may help with the vomiting and weight loss issues.

Good luck!
