I was reading in a health book to take L-glutamine for IBS 3 times a day on an empty stomach. What do you guys know about it? Any experiences with taking it? I bought a bottle of it already, but want to make sure about it before I open it in case I need to exchange it. Thank you soooo much !!!

I take a 500 mg capsule once a day between meals. I take it in the moring with my thyroid med so I have an hour before I can eat. It helps tremendously with the pain. In fact, I have no pain with BMs when I take my L-Glutamine regularly. It won't help with D, C, or gas (at least it shouldn't but if it does - great!). It strengthens the lining of your stomach. If I skip a day, the next day BMs hurt again so make sure you get it everyday. It's available in 500 and 1000 mg caps and as a powder. The powder seeps into your system faster than the caps. How much are you planning on taking each day (dosage amount)? I buy it from vitaminshoppe.com. They have sales all the time and shipping is cheap. Let me know if you have more questions.

Thank you for the great info. I don't know how much I should take. How much do you think I should start with? I bought the caps. I think they are 500 mg. In the health book says to take it with vitamin B6 and C. Can I take it alone with lots of water? I do drink lots of water first thing in the morning.
Thanks again! Blessings, Abi

You can take the L-Glutamine alone with water. Make sure you take it about the same time each day so it stays in your system.
I wouldn't take the C alone. And I don't know about the B6. I take a multivitamin a couple times a day that has both of those in them and I take it with food. I don't think that you have to take the Glutamine w/ the other two. That is probably just their suggestion.
I would start with the 500 mg caps once a day. I saw a change practically overnight. If there is no improvement after a week, go up to 2 500 mg caps. Beyond that, I would consult a doctor just to be safe. And of course, if you notice any changes for the worse, stop taking it right away.

I plan to start taking it alone tomorrow morning before breakfast. I hope it helps me as much as it helps you. I'll let you know. Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it.

Hello SLHoutz56841,
I just started taking today so I can't say much yet about it. But here it's what hohoyumyum told me about it."It won't help with D, C, or gas (at least it shouldn't but if it does - great!). It strengthens the lining of your stomach". She's been taking it for a while a loves it. I trust God that it will help me as much.
Blessings, Abi

Abigail already answered with my answer to her question but just to add alittle more:
L-Glutamine has never helped me with D or C. It helps with the pain associated with BMs. It strengthens the stomach lining/intestinal wall. For myself, there is no longer any pain during BMs if I take glutamine regularly.

hohoyumyum, somebody told me today that L-Glutamine causes C....What do you know about that? I started taking it today and I don't want to worry abt taking something that might cause me C. Thank you always. Blessings, Abi

I haven't heard about it causing C and it hasn't happened to me. But I am a D and almost nothing can cause C for me. I wish I were more help on this topic. Did you hear this from someone who has experienced C from L-Glutamine? And if you did, do you know if they generally have problems with C and how much L-Glutamine they were taking?

Hello hohoyumyum,
I went to google and been reading on it and I found this www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/nmdrugprofiles/nutsupdrugs/glu_0124.shtml They talk about ADVERSE REACTIONS to glutamine and this what they say: "There are rare reports of constipation and bloating with high dose glutamine peptides in TPN".
I don't know if I should keep taking it or not. I really want to keep taking it(today is my second day) b/c I also read great things about it. In this article they talk about a high dose. I'm taking 500mg a day, but I don't know if that's a high or low dose...What do you think?
Thank you for taking the time to help me, I really appreciate it.
Blessings, Abi

If the only possible side effects are C and bloating, and they are rare, I'd give it a try. That's only my opinion, though. If you feel like you are becoming bloated or perhaps it feels like C is going to be a prob just quit using it. I saw this on website you posted the link for:
Quote:
Those who use oral glutamine peptide supplements for fitness or sports purposes use 1.5 to 4.5 grams (as L-glutamine) daily.
500 mg is only half a gram (1000mg to 1g). Please someone correct me if I'm wrong. But I don't think I am. Since they're recommending 1.5 to 4.5 grams, I'd definately call 500mg (.5 g) a low dose.
How are you feeling so far?

I just bought the 500mg capsules, but the bottle says to take it w/food. You said you take it on an empty stomach. Will it work better that way? Or is it an individual thing, I just have to try it & see?

I was wondering about your pain & how the glutamine helps. I am primarily D--do you mean that you still can have D but you don't have cramps during BM? Lately I have had bouts of cramps and waves of pain during the D. I am on medication but have never heard of the glutamine. I am willing to try anything so I would like to hear about how it helps you!
Thanks for any info!

I hardly ever have bouts of D anymore. Thanks to Heather, I've been stable for about a year. But I did still have a lot of cramping and pain before and during BMs for several months after the D finally started to go away. That is the cramping and pain that is gone now.
What kind of meds are you taking?

Earth Fare is the only healthfood store near me. They had a couple other brands, but they were WAY too expensive, one was $19! Anyway, I've been taking it every morning w/breakfast, but it's too soon for any noticeable effects I guess. Sorry I didn't respond sooner--they've had us working mandatory overtime at work & I'm exhausted! By the time I get home, make dinner, do the dishes & clean up I pretty much collapse into bed! No time for the internet. But thanks for the advice. I can't wait to start seeing results!

Thank you for the info! That's better than what I paid! I paid $6 for 50. I'll definitely get that brand when I run out of these. Thanks!
