Are you a black female IBS sufferer, over the age of 18, from the United States? If so, researchers at a Philadelphia College would like to pay you $10 to fill out a postal survey about your life with IBS. Please do participate in this if you can - research like this is very valuable and can help to highlight what it's really like to live with IBS.

Here's the info from the college - please contact them directly if you are interested:

The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Philadelphia, PA, is conducting an anonymous survey study on women's daily functioning with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We invite black females 18 years old and older diagnosed with IBS to participate in this study.

Participants will complete paper and pencil surveys of approximately 45-60 minutes duration. Participants who meet criteria for the study will receive $10 for completing and returning the surveys. For further details please contact Jeffery McCleary, MA, MS, e-mail JefferyMc@pcom.edu or Tel: (267) 262-0494.

Is there are difference between the races (black and white)? My wife and I adopted a black infant 18 years ago. People used to look at us strangely ... white couple with a black baby. He just graduated high school with a 3.8. Anyway, he has never had problems with ibs, just me, but now I am curious if there is one race that is more acceptable. Does anyone even know?

Hi JJ, That is a good question. I don't know of any blacks
that have IBS. It may be that they don't get it for some
historical diet reasons or something like that. African blacks
rarely get it if at all because of their extremely high fiber
diet, sometimes up to 100 grams of fiber per day. -Bob

I'm a 33 yr old Black female with IBS, I've had it since I was a child and my dad as it also, so I'm not sure if this black or white thing is true.

According to this IBS article from Johns Hopkins:

Quote:

The frequency of IBS in any given population depends, in part, on the ethnic and cultural background of the population being studied, and the criteria used to diagnose the disease. Eight to 20% of adults in the Western world report symptoms consistent with IBS (60-70% of these are women). In the United States, as many as 15% of adults (about 35 million people) report IBS symptoms (note: the frequency of IBS among Caucasian, African American and Hispanic populations is relatively consistent). Asia and Africa have similar rates to those in the United States, and the Western world in general. In India and Sri Lanka, IBS is more common among men, although it is possible that this is a result of differences in symptom reporting and health care use between genders.

The emphasis is mine (and I don't think much of their treatment recommendations).

Wikipedia reports:

Quote:

Point prevalence is 10 - 20% of the general population of Western countries with a much higher lifetime prevalence. Prevalence is similar in India, Japan and China. IBS is less common in Thailand and rural South African areas. In Western countries, but not in India or Sri Lanka, females have a greater risk of developing IBS.

Jed, (he's my black son) eats whole habanero peppers. I don't think that he has ibs. His older brother is half Shoshoni, and like me won't get close to anything that hot.
