Hello,
I have IBS-D and I have not even been able to leave my house for the last 3 days, I am being woken up in the middle of the night. So yesterday I started to watch what i ate. Here is my day maybe someone out there can help me out.

Breakfast: HoneyComb Cereal with water
Lunch: Linguine with tomato sauce and chicken breast
Snacks: Pretzels, dry honeycomb and 1 100 calorie cadbury toffee bits chocolate bar (I needed some sugar)
Supper: Spagetti with tomato sauce, ground chicken with bread and molassas.
I even drank the 16 glasses of water.
I had worse bm's last night and this morning than i have ever had before!! I even had a hard time making it to the washroom once and had to shower, and wash my nightgown (my bathroom is only 10 steps away!)

Please help me!! I want to go out for a walk or go visit my mom for Mother's day. I have even been out of work for 2 days now.

So far today all I have had is one bowl of oatmeal and right now I am making my own bread.

Try the breaking the cycle diet where you keep to really plain foods for a few days and then reintroduce others back in. Something like tomato sauce on a tummy that is unhappy already can send it over the edge D wise I find, even though it is usually safe and plain enough.

Keep away from the chocolate, even at my most stable it can bring on the D, try HFCS free marshmallows instead when you need sugar.

In the meantime, befriend your Immodium. Feel better soon

Hi there

Sorry you're feeling so rubbish.

I'm by no means an expert, but from what you've said I would guess others will look at the tomato based sauces as a possible factor. Also, did you have the chocolate bar on an empty stomach instead of after some soluble fibre?

I think some people on here also have problems with oatmeal, though I'm not 100% sure...

Hope you feel better soon!

hi...
I have problems with oatmeal I find it's too 'heavy' for me... and also chocolate is a bit of a problem for me too... solid chocolate that is but have you tried some of heather's recipes with cocoa powder that might help but I'd recommend even staying off that for a while until your tummy has settled down. when you're feeling up to it look in the recipe index there are loads of chocolatey recipes like brownies etc
hope you get better soon real quick

thank you all. I will stay away from the tomato and chcolate today and see if that helps. i did have the chocolate bar after the pretzels. I think i am going to stick to white bread, potatoes and jam for the rest of the day. Is a little bit of rubarb preserve ok? What about cinnamon & sugar on my bread?

Hi Piglet, I think you're drinking way too much water. If
those are 8 oz glasses, 16 is quite a lot! If you're not
eating enough IF, that's just going to go right through you.
I'd say try cutting your water intake by half, and try eating
more IF. Immodiums will help as others have suggested. But too
much water will again negate that effect. -Bob

Oh. I guess that makes sense. i was trying to follow the guideline from the BTC diet but still incorporating a little taste in as well. Heather if you are there can you advise? Should I stick to 8 glasses of water?

For the short-term, go on the Break The Cycle Diet strictly for 2-3 days. I know it's bland, but the idea is to stay away from absolutely everything that might irritate your bowel. When my gut is super-touchy, anything other than Soluble Fiber is a bad idea for me. Going with only SF foods and hot herbal teas should calm things down. After the 2-3 days is up, start adding in more foods carefully.

Take your Imodium. Don't be afraid to take the maxium dose. Try taking it at regular intervals throughout the day to help get things calmed down.

Looking beyond the BTC Diet, here are my thoughts on what you're eating:

I checked the ingredient list for Honeycomb Cereal. It lists whole grain corn flour, corn bran, and whole grain oat flour. Any grain listed as "whole" or "bran" is almost certainly high in IF and should be avoided until your tummy is not in open rebellion. Even then, you should eat it after SF. Eating anything high in IF first thing in the morning just about kills me.

Oatmeal is half SF and half IF. Once you're fairly stable you may be able to handle it, but I'd avoid it for now.

The Cadbury chocolate almost certainly contains dairy so avoid that. If you want chocolate once you're off the BTC Diet (and I, personally, would no longer find life worth living if I couldn't have chocolate), try the Anti-Depressant Brownies from the Recipe Index. They're nice and chocolatey.

Beyond that, if your tomato sauce is store-bought, check it for culprits like dairy, HFCS, high fat, and meat. If it doesn't contain any of those, it should be fine once your tummy has calmed down. I'm with Cailin, here - I do great with tomato sauce most of the time but when I'm not doing well, I avoid it.

Long term, if you're not using an SFS, give it a try. Since you're D, you want to avoid those that contain any IF and stick with a straight SF type ( web page). As for water, I shoot for between 64 and 100 ounces a day of liquids, made up of water and herbal teas. I need this much because I take a LOT of Acacia. If you're not on an SFS, I'd shoot for 64, more if you can manage it easily - you need to avoid dehydration. Spread it out throughout the day and remember that ice cold beverages can make things worse. Drink your water at room temperature and drink as much in the form of hot herbal teas as you can manage.

HTH. Feel better soon!

Piglet, PLEASE!! Nothing other than what is on the BTC diet for right now. Be kind, rewind! Get that belly back to basics. Stay away from the jam, probably high in fructose NO BUENO on an untamed tummy! and low or no sugar jam might have a sweetener that might make you gassy which would just add to your misery. Please, please, cut back on the water just a wee bit, bring out the french bread and rice and keep warm, but not hot. Listen to calming music and try taking some quiet time, just lying on your back on the floor, eyes closed and just breeeeathe.
