I made sushi today for the first time and it was yummy and easy! A little sticker shock at the price of Nori (4.98)for 5 sheets. I once heard Kat Cora (sp?) say if you don't have a mat for rolling them, use saran wrap, it worked fine. I put Jaz rice & surimi (imitation crab) on one set...rice & avocado with garlic powder on the other. I forgot to buy the wasabi powder so I used the garlic. Both were dipped in soy sauce. Boy do I know what lunch will be for a while. Thanks to all of you who contributed to the other thread that started the sushi fad at my house.

What do you mean by set? Don't you put all the ingredients on one piece of Nori? ![](/messageboards/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif)

We don't pay nearly that much here... a $5 package contains at least 20 sheets!
What also works in place of a mat, according to the guy at one of the local HFS's, is a paper plate. I haven't tried that one, because I have a mat, but in case you wanted to try something else! I imagine waxed paper would work too.
Yay sushi! Love the stuff, and it's so healthy!

When you go to a sushi bar/restaurant, a "set" is a plate of sushi. What she meant (I'm pretty sure!) is that she put different ingredients on each roll that she made. 1 sheet of nori makes a roll, which in turn is cut into 6-8 pieces of sushi.
You can only put so much onto a roll and still be able to roll it! Thin rolls, like I make, are usually just 1 or 2 filling ingredients each, plus the rice and nori. Anything more and they fall apart.

I'm telling you: get a book. There has to be some in the library. Seeing it in *illustrated* print will make it so much easier to understand!

Casey's right, once you see it done you'll get it. I've seen it done quite a bit on TV food shows, which I love!!! And the set is one roll cut up into pieces. Casey do you use a half a sheet of nori or the whole one? Since they were so expensive I used the instructions on the back which called for a half sheet.

How much is safe per serving. They are so high in fat. How much did you add per one serving?
Fat is such a trigger.
How much rice did you use per serving? I think 1/4 dry would be good, right?

I can get by (when I do my sushi-in-a-bowl) with 1/4 to 1/2 of an avocado per bowl. It's enough to give the dish the perfect texture.
